What Skiers Say About Sauze d'Oulx

Sauze d'Oulx attracts mainly intermediate to advanced skiers who value affordability and access to the wider Via Lattea ski area. Reviewers consistently praise the reasonable prices for food, drink, and lift passes, alongside the friendly atmosphere and quality Italian restaurants. The lift infrastructure is frequently criticised as old and slow, with many noting that connections to neighbouring resorts close easily in high winds. Snow conditions are variable, with lower runs often icy or slushy, though tree-lined runs are appreciated. The town itself is described as charming with good nightlife, though some find it quieter than expected.

I enjoyed a great week of skiing with a group of friends in Early March.
Best things about the resort have to be the town and the food, the restaurants serve the best in Italian cuisine and are very reasonably priced - significantly more so than most French resorts.
The lift passes and accomodation were also excellent value for money, as well, the transfers only took 70mins so were very affordable too.
The views from the mountain were amazing, the slopes were very good although snow was rather poor further down and the resort seemed not to want to turn on any of their snow cannons all week - irritating.
During the week, the pistes were very quiet, though at the weekend, especially in the sun, the locals were out in force and the queue did grow noticeably.
There was very good apres on a couple of the nights but very little unless you looked quite hard on others. Although it was fine for us, nightlife late into the evenings was limited.
Worst things about the resort had to be the refusal to use the snow cannons as mentioned, the lifts were also rather slow and old in places. On two of the days, the connections to Montgenevre, and to Sestriere were closed due to high winds so it shouldnt be taken for granted that it will always be passable.

Italian hospitality is fantastic, food is amazing. Limited runs in resort and although it has linked ski resorts, any sign of wind, the lifts shut and can either leave you stuck in your resort or stranded in another. Lofts are very dated and slow. Snow park is shut most days. Lifts shut too early but allowing enough time to visit furthest linked resort.
Good value for money but needs updating.

Great traditional old village.
Very atmospheric .Some really nice restaurants and bars.
Good value for money.
Lower parts not snow sure so some lifts close when conditions are not right.
Always ok if you stay high and great links to sestriere and claviere /Montgenevre.

Great resort for intermediate, loads of nice runs trough the trees and plenty of good restaurants on the slopes and in town. Lifts are very dated though and could do with a general renewal. The old town is very pretty and theres plenty of après-ski bars.

Sauze is a lovely town with some old Alpine charm and has a nice laid back vibe. We skied the 1st week of March this year, with a big dump of snow the day we arrived. This did mean the following day they only opened 2 lifts in the morning due to avalanche risk and only one more higher up in the afternoon. So it was a bit limiting and queues formed. The next day you still couldnt ski across to Sansicario and Sestriere as the link was closed. They never did open up the top of Sauze the week we were there. Pros of the resort are lots of tree skiing if the visibility is bad, lots of red runs, nice wide runs in Sansicario. Cheap mountain restaurants but good food. A nice vibe and that time of year there was very little queuing for lifts.
The link across to France is long and pretty much takes a full morning to get across due to having to take 3 lifts in a row and some lifts being very slow. ( my daughter and I ski over 90km a day so it wasnt due to ability!)
We like the Italian vibe but some of the pistes were never opened up which didnt make sense. However the ski area from Sauze to Sestriere is pretty extensive so its not a big deal! Id say a good resort for intermediate / advanced skiers, maybe not so good for beginners on the Sauze side. We didnt really experience the off piste as by the time things had opened up the snow was very heavy. The views are beautiful. I would go back as we had a great week, but wouldnt go back consecutive years in a row. In a way its nice its not over developed as it keeps its charm as long as you dont mind a few slow chairs lifts!

Great resort, friendly welcoming atmosphere and a decent size ski area when all the lifts and links are operating, unfortunately the lifts are old and they close them without much notice due to wind even on relatively still days. Making it become very limited. If this was rectified I would definitely go back as it stands probably not.

Usually quiet slopes and little lift queues even with slow lifts. Great area to explore when there is enough snow. Some hotels at the top of the village are up a very steep hill so those with less fitness levels need to stay in the town .

To start the holiday the airport is efficient and the transfer short.
The majority of the accommodation is close enough to the lifts.
There are plenty shops and supermarkets if you are self catering.
Apres ski is unique that there is something for everyone.
Now for the important matter of skiing
The area is massive and varied ( agian something for everyone)
Dining out on the slopes is one of the best Ive encountered , plenty of choice in lovely wooden cabins , not expensive and live music in some of the restaurants.
Ive been to Sauze many times and Ive seen the lift system improve every time.
All I all by far my favourite resort.

When weather is bad and links are shut to other resorts, Sauze terrain is very limited, however it does offer good tree skiing for free riders and good groomers for beginners and intermediates. It does however seriously lack advanced terrain on piste.

When the links are open (which is most of the time) the resort suddenly becomes significantly better. Sestriere offers lovely wide open groomers (which are often empty) and montgenvre offers some of the best alpine free ride terrain I have ever ski'd.

The town is great depending on what you're looking for. If you're after a boujee ski town with lots of fine dining then look elsewhere. Sauze is great for affordable family ran restaurants and bars with a nice Italian vibe. Perfect for people who go away mainly for the skiing and don't want to spend an arm and a leg on meals out.

To summarise, this resort is great for intermediate skiers and more advanced skiers who favour the off piste. If you get unlucky with weather then you will be limited for terrain, but otherwise the options are endless.

Definitely would recommend this resort, although you may be better off staying in sestriere as when the weather is bad, this resort has more options for skiing.

We arrived on the saturday and had a metre dump on the sunday, whcih is great.

The resprt took two days to open up, and even then not fully. The pistes were great when they opened. Apre was only really there on a couple of nights of the week.

The off-piste options looks great, and the connectors to other resorts let's you play about with a load of options.

Food was amazing and so were the locals, really friendly and helpful

Went to Sauze at the beginning of March 2024. We had the most snow id ever seen on the first day and only 2 lifts were able to open but once they were able to open all the runs/lifts conditions were excellent. Plenty of blues and reds for all abilities and some great spots for lunch and apres in Sportinia. Skiing in the other areas of the Vialattea was also good with wide blues. The nightlife is also lively get yourself to ghost bar for the silent disco on Friday night.

Mainly an intermediate place for those who like reds. Blues are narrow so overall not ideal for beginners. The village is lovely with quite a few nice places to eat and drink.

Great resort, really friendly and lots of places to eat and drink at reasonable prices!
Bit more of a party vibe going on than some other resorts.
Ski lifts and slopes can be closed often though, which is a bit of a downer, but doesn't effect overall experience!
Love it!

Sauze is known as a party place. Didnt particularly find the apres ski very lively but it really gets going in the evening. Plenty of live music and DJs. As youd expect in Italy the pizza is great. The local ski area is quite small and repetitive with some of the worst queues and bottlenecks Ive ever skied. There is no real way around this. Providing the weather allows the link then you can ski over to Sestriere which is an excellent ski area with runs and lifts that just flow without having to study the piste map too much. Be careful though as the lift back to Sauze stops very early in the afternoon. However if the winds are high or the weather bad then you are stuck in Sauze. Had some lovely quiet powdery runs though through the woods on a heavy snow day which made up for some of its other shortfalls. Overall a fun place and a fun combo for ski/partying but I dont think I could go back until they resolve the slow, limited chairlift issue.
