My first trip to Sun Peaks in January 2025 blew me away...so much that my wife and I even looked into real estate there, thinking ahead to retirement! Sun Peaks is its own municipality, and a very cute little mountain town. They have plenty of lodging, restaurants, and shops to keep visitors entertained.
As the 2nd largest terrain area in Canada (after only Whistler), there is tons to explore and enjoy. It's a very family friendly resort, with intermediate and beginner runs accessible in all areas, as well as plenty of expert runs and steep terrain, long mogul fields, and off-piste access. With such a large area, Sun Peaks absorbs crowds nicely, and we rarely had to wait in any lift lines. There are 2 alpine bowl areas (with a new chairlift to their West Bowl which opened for the 2024-25 season). The bowls include accessible intermediate runs, as well as some steeps, trees, and bumps.
Their grooming operation is fantastic - I've never skied on nicer groomers. Their daily grooming report lets you know where you might want to start your day if you're looking for some gorgeous long cruisers to get warmed up. They leave plenty ungroomed as well, if you're looking to hit some of that BC powder, or challenge your knees to some moguls.
Navigation is pretty easy, with their well laid out trail map, lift layout, and not too much traversing cat tracks to move between areas (though there is some, especially coming back from the West Bowl). However, I thought some of their on trail signage could be improved - often wondering if I was going to my intended trail. Most chairlifts are high speed, though if you find yourself at the fixed-grip Burfield chair, get ready for a long, slow ascent.
Highlights included the enclosed tree-lined cozy feeling of many runs in the Mt. Morrisey area, as well as some brutal steep moguls there. The long cruisers off the Sunburst chair were super fun too, and if it's not closed for race training, the OSV run was one of our favourites. The apres ski village was fantastic, whether you're looking for a midday top notch espresso break for coffee geeks (me), a rowdy pub, a quick slice of pizza, or a quiet family restaurant - Sun Peaks has it all.
We're returning again this winter, bringing more friends and family to convert them to this world class, family friendly ski resort!
