What Skiers Say About Sestrière

Sestrière attracts a wide range of skiers from beginners to experts, with reviewers frequently noting its connection to the wider Milky Way ski area including Sauze d'Oulx, Sansicario, and Montgenèvre in France. Intermediate and advanced skiers consistently praise the well-groomed pistes and variety of red runs, though several beginners found limited green runs and steep blues challenging. Value for money is repeatedly highlighted as excellent compared to French resorts, particularly for on-mountain food and lift passes. The main recurring complaint involves wind-related lift closures, especially the gondola link to Sauze d'Oulx, which can trap skiers in Sestrière and create queues. Reviewers consistently mention dated lift infrastructure with slow, older chairlifts, though most agree the piste quality compensates for this.

Visited Feb 2024. Snow was ok and the staff worked hard to keep as many runs open as possible. Watching the snow later on in the season it seems much better later so we have booked to go first week in March this year. Hotel was ok, staff friendly and helpful. No Tea/Coffee making facilities which I thought was poor but, travel kettle has sorted that issue. Other than that, nice resort and nice clean, friendly hotel. Hotel Du Col

Runs are predominantly red and black with the occasional blue which were quite advanced blues. Not ideal place for a beginner. Parks and extras were limited, people were generally friendly and lifts were good but not much going on here in terms of apre or other entertainment activities

Sestriere was really goof as a whole. I spent my time there ate hotel principi de pie monte. The food was amazing and the beer wasn't too overpriced. Slopes and facilities were well upkept for December but food on the slopes was very costly

Sestriere was a really well thought through, well run, and affordable resort. With nice wide but challenging reds it's a good place for an intermediate to improve.

Having skied in Brovets for 10 years in a row, we decided to try Sestiere last year. Wow, just wow, the slopes were very well groomed, wide & very forgiving. The only downfall was the nightlife, this was non existent, but that didn't put us off for booking to go there again this year as there's so many slopes, we could not do that many of them (over 400km) Our hotel was ski in, ski out, which was amazing, as was the views from the hotel. Ski lifts are 50m & the Gondala only 150m from the hotel & the queues were short. On one of the days there, we took an excursion coach to Montenevre (think that's spelt right......lol) & managed to ski from France, back into Italy & back into France again to catch the coach back to Sestiere. Looking forward to our return to Sestiere on the 4th March 2025

Hard to fully review as we didn't have great snow over new year. Due to limited snow half the runs were shut which made the the others really busy. Good links to other resorts helped though.

Huge resort and very well connected by lifts. Can do different runs every day for a week without needing to repeat. Can find new restaurants and bars every day. Ski pass very good value and gets you to montgenevre if you fancy a challenge getting there and back in a day. One of the best feelings to have a proper Italian pizza with a Mountain View.

A great resort with lots of runs and further fantastic scope due to its links to the rest of the ViaLattea domain... on PREVIOUS visits, but NOT this one!

Unfortunately, as I now know, Sestriere is NOT the right choice for an early break, e.g. the first couple of weeks of the season, pre-Christmas.

Its height promising snow-sure skiing is meaningless as this time, as the local authorities did not open the lifts. A link to the lower resorts was not expected so early, but here well above 2,000m at the base there was plenty of snow, including much artificial cover, which the altitude and low temperatures ensure is going nowhere. Yet it was mostly inaccessible.

Do they save the mountain above Borgata for the Christmas influx!? All I know is that there were only THREE chairs running for the whole week! This meant all the learners, including many school groups, in with the rest of us, were on a handful of runs only 'til the weekend, when one more lift (a short, very old, painfully slow chair) finally opened up a couple of extra routes.

SO disappointing to be looking up at the bashers and sprayers in action, and km of snow-covered pistes... all tantalisingly closed. We did every run available, several times over, on just day one! I WILL be back, because the ViaLattea IS truly fantastic  but always in high season in the future.

We were there early (22-29th December) so only about 50% of the resort was open it was quiet with very quick queues though, apart from below borgata where they could have done with opening the other lifts..

Runs were well groomed, theres lots of on piste amenities and the linked reports mean a large ski area.

Not much live music
Heavily dependent on links to sansicario for the rest of the Via Lattea area.
Good value for money in most of the bars and restaurants.

Interesting history, Sestriere has many plus points. Great value for money, with fun apres ski.
Despite being high, the snow conditions werent great when we were there. The blue runs were either closed, or incredibly challenging. In fact, in many cases you were better taking the red or black piste options.
Theres a lovely vibe about the place and I found it really grew on me, but theres also an awkwardness that leaves you having to go uphill to get to the lift.
Great options to ski into neighbouring Sousie Dou (?spelling) and a day trip to France.

Second time skiing, first time in Italy. The resort had some really nice snow and plenty of options for intermediate skiing. Some really nice routes with lots of space so you can avoid other skiers if youre a little inexperienced. The town was lovely and very fitting to the experience, matched the style of a ski village and was a lovely area to explore. The resort had some nice bars around the slopes that offered food and drinks so it was nice to have some pit stops on the way around.

Sestriere, part of the Milky Way (is Latea) is linked to Sestriere by a high speed gondola, and a further 3 resorts, in Italy and one in France (Montgenevre)
Hosts of the 2006 Olympics, this high altitude resort combines chic with family friendly vibes.
The ski school is great with many English speaking instructors. There are plenty of blue and green runs near to the resort and further up the mountain there are plenty of red and blacks if you fancy trying the Olympic Kandaha.
There are a good choice of mountain restaurants and bars, if you like eating lunch on the slopes. In the town there is a good selection of restaurants, night clubs and hotels, and apartments to rent.
If you like shopping, there are shops galore with colourful window displays.
Sestriere is linked to Sauze D'oulx by gondola and the skiing over that side of the mountain is even more extensive.
All in all Sestriere is a great resort with a touch of Italian class, for all levels of skiers and will want you returning for more like I have with my family since 1980.
