What Skiers Say About Mayrhofen

Mayrhofen attracts primarily intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders, with many users noting it's less suited to complete beginners due to limited green runs and some challenging blues. The resort is consistently praised for its modern, efficient lift system, well-groomed pistes, and extensive skiable terrain across the Zillertal valley, including glacier access at Hintertux. Users frequently mention the lively après-ski scene, particularly at mountain bars and in the town centre, though some note it can feel overcrowded during peak times and festivals like Snowbombing. The low altitude of the town is a recurring concern, with several reviewers reporting slushy conditions in the afternoons, especially later in the season, and the inability to ski back down to the valley.

Loved my two days of riding at Mayrhofen, had a bluebird sunny day which ended with snowfall and then next day was bucketing powder all day!

I've skied Mayrhofen quite a few times. Early January was a fantastic time to visit. We had 2 big dumps of snow so fresh tracks were incredibly easy to achieve. Skied so incredible lines under the 150er gondala. Lifts are very well run and first lift is pretty achievable if you're there about 7:40. Penken park is superb, the fresh snow meant some of the bigger lines were out of action for a few days but the jib line is always fantastic and had a great range of features to progress on. Mayrhofen as a town is lovely, it has character and a good level of Austrian charm. The food is pretty good we ate at - Mo's, Ellie's, Manni's, and had a couple nights grabbing quick food from Gasser. The apres is relatively cheap but the music often leaves a lot to be desired. Brukenstadl isn't my favourite club in a resort but it definitely serves a purpose. It's a good resort for all abilities.

Beautiful villages make up the series of resorts along the valley offering different terrain and experiences. Quiet and friendly. Resort and up mountain prices very fair. Plenty of varied pistes and enough off piste to keep you happy for a week.

I really like Mayrhofen. It's big enough to explore different areas on different days and get away from the crowds.

Good variety of slopes, lots of side piste, good parks, decent lift system so your day on the hill is sorted.

The apres is great if that's your thing.

It's a popular resort though so it can get crowded.

I visited this Austrian ski resort for a snowboarding/music festival in 2024, and it was absolutely unforgettable. The views were beyond stunningeverywhere you looked, there were snow-covered mountains and breathtaking scenery. The runs themselves were incredible, offering something for every skill level, and the snowboarding conditions were perfect.

The music at the festival was on point, creating the ideal vibe for après-ski fun, and it was so easy to get lost in the energy of it all. What truly made the experience special, though, were the workers. Everyone I interacted with was so warm, friendly, and welcomingit really added to the overall positive experience.

I genuinely have nothing bad to say about this resort. From the slopes to the staff to the music, everything was perfect. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone should visit this resort at least once in their life!

Found the town quite dark and felt quite removed from the ski area as only one black run down to it so cant sit and watch skiers unless you are staying in the few on mountain hotels.

Nice shopping in the town.

Get the train to some of the neighboring ski areas. Great day out on the train.

Great resort with a ton of variety. Pretty icy when we were there as it hadnt snowed in a while, but still great quality runs. Some very funny blues where the snow cannons were left on, creating snow drifts that were an immediate fall zone, but overall great stuff

Food on the resort wasnt overly expensive and good quality with a range of options for different dietary restrictions (being vegetarian in Austria can be tough!)

Good selection of hotels and eateries apres bars extremely busy and you struggle to get served. We stayed hotel Strass right next door to Penkenbahn I would advice requesting a room away from the attached Icebar if you like piece and quiet
The Penken lift first thing is a nightmare so get there early, first few chairs are also busy along with slopes, being a town with high cliffs all around you are limited to this one lift or Ahornbahn a ten minute walk away but pistes a limited at Ahorn (good black to resort) a couple of trips to the Hintertux glacier is well the effort as is a trip do to Zell Ziller lots of skiing there but just make sure your on Zillertal side of valley before lifts close or I guess it would be expensive taxi back
All in all a very busy resort I wouldnt rush back but I would go back at some point

Get up early and take the 150er and then ski Route 66 (while its pristine) before going back up the 150er to ski to Eggalm. Be aware that Route 66 gets quite tough in the afternoon especially when everyone is heading back to Mayrhofen. If you have skiers who are tired or inexperienced they can take the 150er back down and head for the Knorren lift to get back to Mayrhofen.

The bus system is very good and the ski area is extensive using the Penken lift in centre of village to take you to main ski area which links all areas except glacier which you can get a bus to from the train station.
I feel a little bit sorry for beginners as there didn't seem to be many blues further away from ski school area and the reds are pretty tough and quite a few ungroomed..
The skiing are however is really good if your relatively proficient.
Rastkogel and Finkenburg are nice.
Glacier is ok if weather is good about 35 minutes away on green line bus.
The town itself is good, one main street with bars and cafes, if you go down the side streets there is some good places aswell.
I would definitely come back...plenty of skiing for a week.
Enjoy it

Mayrhofen is a fantastic ski resort that offers something for everyone, from beginners to advanced skiers. The slopes are well-maintained and provide a wide variety of runs, including many blue and red pistes ideal for intermediate

While Mayrhofen is the most popular town within the ski-pass, the nearby resorts are much more enjoyable Kaltenbach has very wide slopes, very good and friendly offpiste options. Hintertux glacier has very good snow due its altitude and it's a dream destination after a dump (and bluebird sky)

Après-ski in Mayrhofen is lively, with numerous bars, restaurants, and venues to enjoy after a day of skiing, especially in the town center. The village itself is charming, with a great selection of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
