What Skiers Say About Val Gardena - Gröden

Val Gardena attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders drawn to the Sella Ronda circuit and the broader Dolomiti Superski area. Reviewers consistently praise the extensive terrain, well-maintained pistes, efficient lift system, and dramatic Dolomite scenery. The quality and value of on-mountain dining is frequently highlighted, as is the blend of Austrian efficiency with Italian hospitality. Common criticisms include limited après-ski options, afternoon slush on lower slopes during warmer periods, variable natural snowfall requiring reliance on artificial snow, and some confusion with piste signage and maps. A few reviewers note that the resort may be challenging for complete beginners due to limited green runs and the need to navigate reds to access certain blue terrain.

I have been to a lot of places and Ithink valgardena and the rest of the sellaronda offers the best groomers and lofts in the world.

Not a super high snow area but if you are lucky hire a guide and there are loads of things to explore if you are willing to skin or climb a bit.

Hotels are mainly family owned and super high quality

The entire place is basically italy run by Germans. What more do you want?

This is the very northern part of Italy with the majority of people speaking German. Groomers are very good with very few moguls across the entire area. Plenty of apres, you wont have to look long at the bottom of a mountain. Food is good on the mountain. The fastest way up is on a massive cable car which does take a bit of faff in the morning with the wait time, but once youre on the mountain the lifts are pretty good. Not many families in sight and not tonnes of ski schools, its majority adults (makes sense given the apres). Some of the accom options are fabulous

It was our first time skiing in Val Gardena and the Dolomites area and what a fantastic discovery. The scenery and the views are outstanding. The grooming and preparation of pistes is like I have never seen before and the sense of navigation across different valleys and terrain is unique. The quality and quantity of lifts and the extensive terrain makes it a great value for money option. I will definitely come back

Lovely corner of the Sella Ronda. Spectacular Dolomite scenery. Mostly piste skiing often on artificial snow lower down but its well cared for. Last few years have seen it get more bumpy than it used to. Central areas can develop lift queues but go a little further afield and its quieter. Great links around the Sella and Dolomiti Superski area more widely if you are prepared to travel. Better value food and drink on the hill compared to other nations though its done some catching up post pandemic. Plenty of less tricky skiing for those earlier in the learning curve with lovely places to go to. Do not miss the chance to ski (or board) the Sasslong, the mens World Cup Downhill course usually raced just before Xmas. Youll have no idea how they do it!

Dolomiti Superski - the once in a lifetime for every skier. Beware, you will return and always compare all other resorts to Dolomiti Superski / Sella Ronda. Amazing in size and quality of pistes and food.

Well thought out friendly reasonably priced. The locals make it and are very friendly and proud of their home.
Virtually snow guaranteed.
The range of runs suits all levels and families. World class lift system possibly the best.
Non skiers can take advantage of the tourist office arranged activities and easily use the transport system to get to other villages or even Bolzano. The villages are always very clean and retain character.
There are also a lot of winter walks cafes and resort shops.
Apart from the villages in Val Gardena there is easy access to the vast array of runs in the Sella Ronda and now Cortina.
Now attracting ski snobs who are finding other resorts expensive.
Once you know the area though you can have great ski days and avoid the crowds.
Rarely has lift queues. New investment each year has helped with that.
Best resort hands down and all Ski Dolomiti resorts are invested in each year.

Having been to numerous resorts and ski areas in the past, this was my first time in the Dolomites, and the Sella Ronda region. Without question this is the best region I have skied for both quality and variety of runs and scenery. A fantastic region.
Stayed at the Hotel Boutique Pralong, a small gem of a hotel run by Christian and his family. A welcoming hotel, sumptuous in its decor, with excellent food. A hotel way beyond its 3 star rating.
Will be returning to both the Sella Ronda, Selva and the Pralong again next season.

Val Gardena in particular Sëlva sits at the top of the sella ronda circuit. A luxury ski destination with many top hotels and plenty of prime accommodation. The area is extremely well interconnected with other valleys (Colfosco, Corvara, Arabba, Santa Cristina, Marmolada, etc) forming the sella ronda, a 42km+ round trip circuit that can be taken both ways (clockwise or counterclockwise) for a 3 to 4 hours of non stop skiing experience. From the valley of Sëlva, there are two options to reach a mountain summit, either a fast gondola (8min) named Ciampinoi, accessible only to intermediate / advance skiers as runs from that summit are mostly reds and few blacks, and from where to start the counter clockwise sella Ronda circuit, or a chair lift (across the main road) towards the base of Dantercepies gondola providing access to green/blue runs for beginners and the start of the clockwise sella Ronda. Conspicuously, these two sides are not interconnected by a ski lift, which forces you to take your skis off and cross a street walking if you want to go from Dantercepies side to Ciampinoi side. yet the rest of the whole area is indeed interconnected and ski+ski lifts friendly. The ski area is immense providing over 500km of non stop ski runs, and with the Dolomiti superski pass it opens up to a total of over 1000km allowing you to ski in other nearby areas such as Alps di Suisi, Seceda, Cinquitorri and Cortina. Making it the biggest ski area in the whole Alps. The particular shape of the mountains, the scenery and the selection of pistes offered makes the place a truly unique ski destination.

A truly massive ski area (Dolomiti Superski)all covered by one pass. Exceptional variety of terrain and runs - easily enough for a 2 week stay. The Sella Ronda circuit/ lifts provides super easy no hassle clockwise and anti-clockwise routes around the Sella massif. You easily divert off the circuit to connected areas/ villages. There are several World Cup runs to sample in Val Gardena, Alta Badia. The scenery is stunning with tree lined runs and rocky outcrops everywhere. Being in Sud Tirol means you get the best of both Austrian and Italian cuisine -with good local beer and wine choices. The people are warm and friendly and the service has been excellent in every place I have ever been over many years and many holidays. Accommodation tends to be Hotel or self catering with all accommodation within 10-12 minutes walk of a main lift station. A lively ski village with something for everyone! Highly recommended.

Val Gardena is an incredibly underrated resort in an underrated area. The Sella Ronda, which Val Gardena is part of, is a massive, circular ski area which offers a large variety of pistes, meaning a week is easily spent skiing without getting bored! Probably better suited to skiers who are confident on a red run, as when you arrive at the top of the main bubble, you are faced with some steep runs straight away. However, for those who prefer a quiet blue, the surrounding towns offer these in abundance, reached either by a short bus, or by a series of lifts and sedate path runs. On super cold days, there is nothing nicer than a heated chair lift and you'll be delighted to hear that Val Gardena boasts one of these! The town itself is built on a bit of a hill, so good shoes are a must for walking around town or just catch a frequently visiting bus! For the foodies amongst us, prepare for Austrian insipred meals, plenty of polenta and of course pizza. As this resort is near some great wine regions, I would recommend trying the local wines, my favourite being anything containing Gruner Veltliner
