What Skiers Say About Val Thorens
Val Thorens attracts a wide range of skiers and snowboarders, from beginners to experts, with many praising its high altitude for snow reliability throughout the season. The resort is part of the Three Valleys, offering extensive terrain and well-maintained pistes with efficient lifts and minimal queuing. Après-ski is consistently highlighted as lively and energetic, with popular venues like Folie Douce and Bar 360, though some note it caters more to a younger, party-focused crowd. Most accommodation is ski-in/ski-out, and reviewers appreciate the variety of runs, though several mention that food and drinks are expensive. Beginners note limited green runs and that many blues can be challenging or icy, while advanced skiers praise off-piste options and access to neighbouring valleys.

As part of the 3 valleys area you won't be short of terrain provided weather permits and the links are open. When they are I'd go as far as to say it is the best inconnected ski area in Europe bar none. There is terrain to suit everyone and a modern lift system that ensures even in peak season queues are minimal.
Given its altitude your usually guaranteed decent snow but with the altitude comes a lack of trees so on poor weather days VT is very exposed. Neighbouring Meribel and Courchavel offer tree lined runs but when you need them most the inter Valley links may well be shut due to weather conditions.
If links are closed Val Thorens and lower resorts of Menuire and St Martin still offer a large ski area with mostly groomed runs best catering for beginner to upper intermediate skiers. Orelle offers a few slight more advanced runs.
All in all I'd recomend Val Thorens as an all round resort. Choose wisely in terms of location of accommodation in town, most are good at letting you know if they are in a lively (noisey) part of town or quiet. Plenty of true ski in ski out options make access to slopes with young kids a dream.
Plenty of options to explore the Valley with the option of Orelle included in the base level Val Thorens ski pass.
The black runs are very fun in my opinion with a good mix of moguls and incline to really make you think.
The best run in my opinion is Combe de Caron which is usually fairly quiet and the perfect length to test your stamina.
Slopes at the base of the resort can become very busy during the day as many of the chairlifts are located on in, however it is wide enough to accommodate the numbers.
Food options and bars are plentiful in my opinion with a range of chained available, Mexican, Italian and of course French food on offer. There is a lack of vegetarian options in general for those who do not eat meat.
Apres Ski is unparalleled in Val Thorens with the iconic La Folie Douce and Bar 360 guaranteed to bring epic memories!
Val Thorens is as snow sure as you can get and it never fails to impress. Highly recommend!
The après ski is amazing off post terrain is great and the overall quality of the resort is amazing.
Only negative: as it is above the tree line this can affect skiing in poor weather/visability although dropping over to Meribel is easy if wind is not high.
Being such a high up resort, i would recommend taking plenty of layers, as some days can be warm and lovely, but when its cold, its really cold.
The ski in-ski out of the resort works really well for the most part. The only warning i have, is if you plan on going to the apres bar 360 (which you should) then because they close the lifts before 360 shuts, some of the properties higher up will include a sizeable walk, so its worth looking this up.
I always give my experiences of Val Thorens, a 10/10. Spot on for families intending on doing a whole load of skiing and chilling out, but more importantly its spot on for the younger generations, for the apres and party atmosphere.
Very high up and therefore guaranteed snow. The town has a good selection of restaurants and bars.
Very family friendly. Weve been twice and will visit again.
Not to mention the choice of apres bar (follie, 360, igloo bar) are amazing!
