What Skiers Say About Val Thorens
Val Thorens attracts a wide range of skiers and snowboarders, from beginners to experts, with many praising its high altitude for snow reliability throughout the season. The resort is part of the Three Valleys, offering extensive terrain and well-maintained pistes with efficient lifts and minimal queuing. Après-ski is consistently highlighted as lively and energetic, with popular venues like Folie Douce and Bar 360, though some note it caters more to a younger, party-focused crowd. Most accommodation is ski-in/ski-out, and reviewers appreciate the variety of runs, though several mention that food and drinks are expensive. Beginners note limited green runs and that many blues can be challenging or icy, while advanced skiers praise off-piste options and access to neighbouring valleys.

It is quite expensive however .
Were lucky last year to have excellent snow cover, first two days visibility was nil, but by day three it was clear skies and sunny, plus we had 20cm fresh powder to play around in.
Some excellent gulleys that catch the snow heading down into Orelle.
Switched to piste skis for the latter half of the week, lots of lovely red groomers for carving . By 2/3pm the busy slopes get pretty chewed up- also on the last couple days some slopes were very icy.
Very condition dependent- but overall a well equipped resort with heaps of options.
Definitely the busiest area in the 3 Vallées, while there's sometimes a bit of queing, as long as plenty of lifts are open it handles the capacity very well.
Couple decent apres bars halway up the slopes (la folie and 360)- good craic but the drinks are very expensive. Standard size is a schooner and you'll pay out the nose for it -c'est la vie.
Really good runs for all experience levels.
Great range of accommodation to cater budget trips to 5 star luxury.
Shame theres a lack of trees but if you ski over to Courcheval, its still possible to find trees in the 3 valleys.
The issue with this however means although it is guaranteed to be skiable each year it can become very busy with people not taking the risk of lower resorts and when the snow is scarce people and groups come up to the resorts. I think the lifts in the resort are very efficient and there is a vast range of them which helps to spread people out. Val Thorens also has a massive amount of ski runs which gives a good variety to the customer and helps to keep people entertained regardless if its there first time skiing there or there 10th. Ive personal been to Val Thorens 5 times alongside other resorts and its one of my favourites.
La Fole Duce and 360 bar are good après bars and there also plenty of good restaurants up on the slopes.
Piste bashing is very good, so pistes are almost always in tip-top condition. There are good runs for all levels of skier, and they're generally well marked.
Lift service is pretty good. At the base level there are a good number to choose from, so queueing is not a big problem.
Restaurants adjacent to the piste are not plentiful, but adequate, with cost of food and drink much the same as lower down in Three Valleys.
Our party stayed there for the best part of a week, and comprised 3 intermediate skiers ranging from very competent to average, and 2 adult beginners and 4 beginner children. The beginners had ski-school lessons, for which there is greater demand than availability, so you need to book tuition in advance of your holiday.
Accommodation is not VT's strong point, and it tends to be relatively expensive, but you're paying for the quality of the skiing.
The bonus is that access to the whole of the 3 Valleys ski area is good, and it's hard to run out of new runs to explore on a week's holiday.
The resort is one of my favourites!
The instructors doing the lessons for me were very patient and helpful.
The slopes were very well maintained and we had absolutely no issues throughout the entire trip.
