What Skiers Say About Chamonix

Chamonix attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders, with many reviewers noting the resort is less suitable for complete beginners due to steep, challenging terrain. The resort comprises multiple separate ski areas accessed by free buses, which reviewers mention frequently as both convenient and occasionally frustrating. Off-piste skiing and steep groomers receive consistent praise from advanced riders, whilst the town itself is described as lively with good restaurants and bars, though dining and accommodation are repeatedly flagged as expensive. Several reviewers mention that runs can be narrow and that lift infrastructure feels dated in places. Weather-dependent snow cover at lower elevations and avalanche-related closures are noted across multiple visits.

We went to brevent, Flégère, les houches, and le tour and I would definitely say le tour is my least fave resort. Les houches is good for beginners and brevent is second best, flegere is good and connects to brevent. Chamonix town is filled with ski shops, pubs and bars and places to buy bits at the shop. Lacking apres ski bars though!

Chamionx is easy and cheap to get to (Manchester to Geneva). It has 4 main ski areas all connected via a free bus service. Beer and food on the mountain are pricey but there are plenty of cheaper options available in the town. Good for family's and plenty to do in the town if you don't ski

Really liked chamonix, i wouldnt say its best for beginners. Theres one good beginners bit which doesnt require a ski lift to get to, but it can get a bit repetitive if you cant ski blues. Whats amazing for more advanced skiiers is the variety and accessibility to other pistes, includong italian ones such as courmayeyr through the tunnel if you have a car. Theres lots of great restaraunts in chamonix. Theres also often snow late into the year. And theres good access to other pistes by bus or car so if one is icy, you can try elsewhere. Little bit cheaper too than some of the of the most expensive resorts. Very pretty town, with a good choice of skiing for mid to advanced skiiers, although it can be quite busy. Theres some amazing mountain views, especially at la panoramique.

There are 5 different ski/board areas in the Chamonix and something for everyone. Le tour is fabulous for families as is Les houches and cleverer. If you like to challenge yourself then the grand Montets is where it’s at. Formidable off piste and glacier skiing. The most stunning views in the alps.

Incredible ski area, however not for the faint hearted. There are groomed runs but the off-piste is where Cham shines! If you want big apres, I’d recommend going down the valley to st gervais, whereas Cham has a good town vibe in the evenings.

I liked it so much, I ended up living there for 5 years. Not the best for beginners, but for intermediate and up it’s cracking. Valle Blanche is a must do.

Visited Chamonix in both winter and summer. Loved both seasons, skiing was fantastic and challenging, however love resorts that ski in ski out. Really enjoyed la tour and grand montets, the available ski fields are vast but take a bit of travelling too. Loved it in the summer and being under montblanc. Food both seasons has been excellent

I had an amazing time in Chamonix. It was perfect for our mixed group of levels of skiers as there were slopes available for all of us and easy blues we could do together. Plus the ski school was really easy to arrange!

Great piste maintenance despite the apparent lack of snow at the end of 2025. Lots of options for different areas to ski. Good bus service but sometimes too crowded/chaotic when travelling with small children.

Chamonix is the best place for off piste skiing in the Alps. You have to take transport from the main town to the ski points (no ski in ski out) but the bus is regular and cheap. Great runs and great resort.

We stayed in Chamonix Sud and got the bus to various resorts. The slopes were so quiet in early January and the conditions were great. The town was buzzy and we had a fab trip!

Chamonix has some amazing ski areas and the resort has lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars to chose from! The pistes are well maintained and vary little waiting at the lifts.

Only downside is having to get a bus to each area as the lifts do not connect them up. However, each area has enough to keep you interested for a whole day.

I love Chamonix for accessibility and area access but I sometimes find it annoying relative to ski-in ski-out. Good for a longer trip with more time to reach the areas you want to get to. Good for a short trip due to travel connections.

Great resort, a short bus ride away from multiple different mountains which are all unique. Great for a range of abilities and for those who want to pick and choose - not skiing the same runs every day.
Didn’t have one bad meal and lots to do in the town of Chamonix.

I used to be a seasonair in Chamonix for a few years working as a transfer driver and chalet host. Chamonix is a working town so all year round businesses. It's off-piste is fantastic if you know your mountains, but recommend a ski guide for the ultimate experience and to get the best out of your time on the slopes. With a delicious mix of old world apres and modern charm bars, there is garunteed something for everyone. For those learning, there are plenty of beginners areas and those watching, restaurants with fantastic views to follow your friends and family learning to ride.

We love chamonix as there is so much choice of accessible areas to ski and the bus network is excellent. There are really good restaurants in the valley to choose from and it is a skiers shopping heaven. We have been 4 times now and love it.

Christmas/ New Year was a very busy period, the struggle to find parking was real. Luckily, they offer buses from everywhere to all slopes. It’s very well connected.
Lots of food options but no real aprés-ski available. Blue slopes are tough but you can find some really nice and easy reds.
Smaller slopes get crowded very easily and it can be a nightmare and you can barely enjoy the rides. Slopes tend to quiet down between the 5th of Jan until the school breaks.

Great, not overly crowded like some places but depends on the season. Beautiful buildings and a lovely surrounding area too, has the very classic ‘movie style’ ski resort vibe that many people look for.
