What Skiers Say About Chamonix

Chamonix attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders, with many reviewers noting the resort is less suitable for complete beginners due to steep, challenging terrain. The resort comprises multiple separate ski areas accessed by free buses, which reviewers mention frequently as both convenient and occasionally frustrating. Off-piste skiing and steep groomers receive consistent praise from advanced riders, whilst the town itself is described as lively with good restaurants and bars, though dining and accommodation are repeatedly flagged as expensive. Several reviewers mention that runs can be narrow and that lift infrastructure feels dated in places. Weather-dependent snow cover at lower elevations and avalanche-related closures are noted across multiple visits.

The resort was lovely and had a variety of ski areas that you could go to along the bus route that where included in your 6 day ski pass. For a time when there wasn’t any snow it was very enjoyable and the staff really made it like there were runs to use. Top tip chamonix is not really for beginners, even though there are green areas most of the nursery slops are in town rather than the mountain. I love chamonix it’s been my second time going back there in the last three years, there are lovely variety of food options and bars which you’ll meet the most valuable people.

Lack of apres ski. Overall we enjoyed the stay. I preferred les houches as the main chamonix Mont Blanc was too crowded. We had a good blue, red and black in les houches. Not enough restaurants around

Chamonix is absolutely awesome, amazing food and views. We went in the end of February 2025 and it was pretty good conditions, it got a little icy at the end after a week of sun but it was still good. The lines weren’t too bad and it’s easy to get away from the crowds. The only thing is because of the nature of the resort, it’s set up for amazing off piste runs but if you want to stick to groomed runs and try the different ski areas you’ll need to rent a car or take public transportation as they’re not all connected.

We chose Chamonix as it was close to Geneva Airport and we were only skiing for three days. There’s a good selection of ski areas catering for all levels. I had read that it was quite advanced in Chamonix but there were plenty of blue runs throughout the linked areas.

Chamonix & Argentiere are the two resorts I’ve explored with my friends and UCPA, it provided excellent beginner slopes and good ski lifts with the nice apres ski facilities

Came to Chamonix for a week over new years! It is unlike other resorts I have been to as there are lots of different ski areas to ski but they are not connected. This is fun but does mean getting buses everywhere. As a skier between the beginner and intermediate stage I found this a more difficult resort to ski with the blues being as challenging as reds in other resorts. This could also be due to the lack of snow fall making conditions icey. I would say the resort is best for intermediate and expert skiers and not beginners although there are baby and green slopes there isn’t as many and if you want to go high up you have no green options.

For people very new to ski/ snow boarding it is not the best in December as areas which focus on beginner slopes were not open due to lack of snow (i.e. Les Houches).
But if you are beginner-intermediate level it is fine as Brevent & Balme (Le Tour) were open in December (light snow coverage) and they had some green and a few blue runs.
More family focussed ski resort, les of an Apres Ski vibe where we were, but that was fine for us.
The Chamonix village at Christmas is pretty but there was no snow in the village in December - a parade on Christmas eve a handful of market stalls with delicious mulled wine. Plenty restaurants to eat (we reserved dinner each night before the trip). Lots of bakery’s in Chamonix village perfect to get breakfast on the go.
Les Aiglons was a great hotel - nice buffet breakfast, excellent restaurant for dinner, comfortable beds, sauna, spa, pool. The in-hotel ski hire shop were great and very convenient & helpful - can hire ski clothes but we just hired ski boots and skis & they were great. Hotel has a locker room to store skis and boots in when you return.

Chamonix is just not the resort it used to be. The other resorts have surpassed it while it feels Chamonix gas gone backwards. Not having the top Grand Montain lift is terrible, but really most of the lifts are tired and there are big queues. Not worth the lift price and certainly not worth the terrible bus system.

We’ve have skied in many areas. Chamonix, le plagne, Austria all were loved. Chamonix we have done 3 times purely due its short transfer from airport. Great runs especially in Le Tours. Chamonix is beautiful at Christmas where they do a Christmas carnival.

It was me and my friends first time on a ski holiday, I snowboard and she ski’s we’re both beginners and we found the blue runs in certain places were really good and wide others were more narrow and icy.

Highly recommend Les Houches and Brevant for Beginners/intermediate both places have wide runs and excellent views!

Check out Bar’d up if you want lively atmosphere and cheap drinks

Ski areas is split up in total lots of small resorts. We mostly in the Flegere and Brevent areas. Both resorts had a nice beginner area and some good blue runs to ski down, with reds higher up the mountain. Wasn’t too busy at that time of year and food options on the mountain we’re good.

Our first ski trip in Chamonix and we absolutely loved it. It's one of the few places we would return to! Got a last minute deal online, organised passes and equipment hire easily. The resort had everything we needed, including a nearby spa hotel for a well needed spa day to break up the skiing days! Lovely french restaurants nearby. And takeaways for cheaper options! A trip up Mont Blanc is essential and impressive! Also had great fun on the alpine coaster!

Hadn’t been skiing in years and this was the perfect place to get back into it. As with any well know resort it is quite busy which means sometimes having to cue or navigate around too many skiers on one piste at once. The off piste options through the forested areas and at the top of the mountains look beautiful however some require very steep climbs. Overall very very good resort HOWEVER my dad hates button lifts and they exclusively use really really long button lifts (except for 2 chair lifts) so he was not happy about that at all. Also the apres ski pubs and bars seemed very quiet - perhaps due to the time of year???
