Val d'Isère Review Summary

Val d'Isère attracts predominantly intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders, with many reviewers noting the extensive ski area (particularly when combined with Tignes) and high-altitude, snow-sure terrain. The resort is consistently praised for its après-ski scene, especially venues like Cocorico and La Folie Douce, and the quality of piste grooming. Beginners report mixed experiences, with some finding suitable runs at altitude but others noting that routes back to the village are red or black, requiring gondola access. Nearly all reviewers mention high prices for accommodation, dining, and lift passes, though most consider the overall experience worthwhile despite the cost.

Been to most of the top resorts in Europe but always keep coming back to Val. Sure it's ridiculously expensive but for sheer variety of terrain it's unbeatable. Conditions generally stay pretty good right up to the end of season in May. Just avoid in Feb high season when it's overrun by Kamikaze kids.

One of my favourite resorts. Lots of options for groomed runs over a large ski area. Usually great snow, although can get icy at times on a certain black run back to town. Plenty of options for food and accommodations, but a little pricey.
Love the bar (La Folie...) on the mountain but wish it was a bit more affordable.

A fantastic all round resort, particularly for experts and intermediates. Runs are snowsure being above the treeline. There are some nice tree lined runs down to La Daille. Some of Europes best off piste terrain. The resort is picturesque and lively, with great bars and apres ski. Beginners have good options although some greens and blues are tricky. Accommodation can be expensive but there are affordable options out of town.

This resort is easy to get around, has plenty of runs and an endless amount of skiing. Lots of fun après bars and varied restaurants for all budgets. My favorite resort by far !!

Not that many black runs but you can still find challenging stuff. The lifts are by far the most efficient out of any resort Ive ever been to. The height of the resort means snow is very reliable no matter what time of year. You can travel from one side of the resort to the other very quickly without having to bus.

Great resort all round, it holds a high status. There has been various lift improvements in recent years really enhancing the experience. Some great apres ski options, with the likes of la folie douce. It has good access skiing into close by resorts and some great off piste skiing for all levels.

Val DIsère is a great resort for all abilities. It boasts a range of quality runs from green to black spread out over a huge area and easily connected to Tignes as well as some excellent off piste terrain. High altitude means excellent snow coverage all season, open from early December to early. A great town with a number of different restaurants and cafes and a buzzing après ski and nightlife including the infamous folie douce and cocoricos. Whist busy periods can be challenging you can still get plenty of skiing done whenever you visit. A perfect resort for all ski and snowboarding abilities and overall excellent vibes.

Val Disere is a great resort with a good range of runs for different abilities. If youre the kind of skier/boarder who likes to travel and have a full day out covering a lot of terrain, I dont feel it is the resort for that (compared to three valleys or port du soleil). However, pistes are well maintained, the resort and apartments are beautiful and lifts are great. It is very expensive and flashy, so if that is not your vibe, I would stay in Tignes. Especially if you are there to ski and not apres/party, ski area is better in Tignes (although restaurant ops are not).

Spent time in Val disere in Jan 23.

Overall had a great experience with great restaurants, apres (there is a folie douce accessible from tithes and val disere), accommodation and of course snow and pistes. With such a large area of terrain, it was easy to get away from crowds and find some quieter pistes to ski especially if you head right over to Col de Liseran.

One draw back of val disere is the price, but the quality of the resort is right up there so it certainly warrants a premium on other resorts without the reputation of courchevel etc. Very family friendly and good for groups without kids alike.

If I was to return I would stay in tignes (I did this in Dec 23) due to cheaper prices however I only look for basic accommodation. That being said, the majority of my skiing was done in val disere which tells you a lot about the quality, and number, of pistes.

If you love snow, fine dining and partying then this is the right place for you! Val disere is an absolutely beautiful ski resort with so many runs to accomplish you find it hard to conquer the mountains. With lots of places to see including two glaciers, a tree top adventure trail and awesome freestyle park!! (Just to name a few) which makes it it perfect for all ages. If youre into free riding/off piste skiing then this place is second to none! You need to check it out! Val d isere seems to be one of the more pricey places to go but is worth every penny! Its definitely 10 out of 10 for me!

Stayed at Val at Christmas and it was great. First few days respite was very quiet until a large influx of people at the weekend but was still not overcrowded.

Large ski area keeps you entertained all week with lots of options to go further afield to Tignes and other areas.

Snow was great and lots of off piste options if thats what youre looking for.

Lots of good ski and snowboard schools / instructors to brush up on your skills.

Good night life and restaurants too if your out and about apres ski!

Val dIsère is one of the best resorts you can ski, especially when taking advantage of Tignes as well with your pass.

Plenty of options for all different levels from easy runs on the nursery slope to hitting the face in late afternoon, to really challenge your abilities down pretty steep ice.

Overall the skiing is great for pistes and if you know where to go there are some fantastic areas for finding some amazing powder. Although you do need to know the spots as otherwise the easy reach areas are pretty much run through within the first hour of the day after a snow fall.

The downfall however it the price of the place. Its premium prices throughout and if you just want a resort for good skiing and thats the main focus, then you may find places much cheaper than Val. From rentals, to the local food shops, everything is bumped up (go down the valley by 25 mins and youll find food about half the price). But admittedly thats probably the only major drawback, so if youre happy to spend for the holiday then there isnt much that val dIsere would cater for on the slopes and around the village.

Very good après-ski and amazing slopes. Probably aimed at more advanced skiers and snowboarders rather than total beginners. This is due the slopes back to town being quite difficult. Also has great off piste as well as a big terrain park.

What's all the fuss about?

Yes it's unique being an 'upside down resort', so those looking for gentle terrain get to go high but this means that everyone funnels back into the resort on reds which are perfectly nice for the 1st 20 mins before they turn into a scene from gladiators. Santons is a very busy narrow half-pipe that turns into a very flat run into resort more suited for motorised vehicles than skiers trying to defeat gravity.

Unbelievable ski area. Access to all of espace Killy, giving you more runs than you could ever need for a week. Very solid off piste as well only really lacking trees but to be expected with the snow sure altitude.
Only draw back would be how difficult the runs to return to resort are, however there are solid gondola options back down into the town for beginners.
