Val d'Isère Review Summary

Val d'Isère attracts predominantly intermediate to expert skiers and snowboarders, with many reviewers noting the extensive ski area (particularly when combined with Tignes) and high-altitude, snow-sure terrain. The resort is consistently praised for its après-ski scene, especially venues like Cocorico and La Folie Douce, and the quality of piste grooming. Beginners report mixed experiences, with some finding suitable runs at altitude but others noting that routes back to the village are red or black, requiring gondola access. Nearly all reviewers mention high prices for accommodation, dining, and lift passes, though most consider the overall experience worthwhile despite the cost.

I loved Val d’Isere! It was so perfectly picturesque, the type of setting Netflix would eat up. It’s all quite close together and has this real snow globe vibe. So much to do here! Including a sauna/pool access with your lift pass and also really affordable ski-paragliding! Would recommend to families and groups of friends of all ages.

Val d’Isère is an absolutely incredible ski resort — one of the best in the Alps. The terrain is huge, varied, and beautifully maintained, with everything from long, scenic cruisers to challenging off-piste routes. The village itself has a great atmosphere, combining classic alpine charm with lively après-ski.

It is expensive, no doubt about that, but the overall experience, world-class skiing, and high-quality infrastructure make it feel worth the price. If you’re looking for a premium ski trip with unforgettable runs and top-tier amenities, Val d’Isère delivers.

Val is a superb resort with reliable snow from December to End of April.
Really friendly resort with all types of accommodation.
A total fun bubble.
Great ski schools and great private lessons available.
You don’t need to spend a fortune on the slopes for lunch ( but you can do ) !
Saturday mornings are the times to ski in high season when slopes are empty !

Great skiing and variety of slopes both on piste and off piste. Resort is expensive and you have to be a good skier to ski back to the resort otherwise get the bubble back. Limited options of beginners

This is my favourite resort in France. Combined with the Tignes ski area there is so much fun and varied terrain especially for more advanced riders. Tree runs at le Fornet, well groomed runs and efficient lifts to take you over to the parks at Tignes.
I particularly love the picturesque village and ambience of Val d’Isere, a completely different feeling to the purpose built resort feel and party atmosphere in Tignes. That doesn’t mean there aren’t fun places for apres ski though! I only wish that it was more affordable…

I took my 7 yr old son to Val d'isere during the school easter holidays and we had a great time, the lifts were surprisingly not that busy, free lift pass for my son which is a great idea to get children into skiing/snowboarding. There was also lots of apres ski activities for children. Easter egg hunts, sledging,

I've been skiing in Val D'isere for 27 years and it is without doubt my favourite ski area. Would not be a great first choice for beginners as there are not easily accessible greens, but that generally means you meet experienced skilled skiers on the slopes. It's a fast loving resort and has the logistics to cope. Not cheap but worth the money for the miles of ski area! Still 3 cheap restaurants on the slopes for those in the know!

Fab range of skiing for all people , although you have to be at least intermediate to see much of it .
Stunning scenery , some tree skiing , amazing views , some wildlife .

Off piste is amazing although it gets some tracks in quite quickly . You then need a guide or knowledge to find more .

Great live music most nights .

Amazing place! We went for new year and there was lots going on. Hotels are close to the slopes and the ski lifts weren't too busy. There are plenty of food places, although they are very expensive (and the staff are quite rude).

Deserves its reputation as one of Europes top resorts. We went last in 2022 when Covid measures were still in place so cannot accurately comment on the quietness of the slopes or efficiency of lift queues but the slopes were well maintained and as challenging or easy as you like. With the link to Tignes there is something for everyone

Excellent lift system, couple of difficult runs getting back into Val but they can be easily avoided if a gondola or venicular is used. Great variety of slopes. My favourite resort for skiing. I'm a bit too old for the excellent apes ski available though.

Val dIsère is a high altitude resort with very consistant snow at all levels through out the season. Pistes are well prepared each night and are in great order even after a period of no snow fall. Saturdays and every lunch time are excellent for quiet or even empty slopes. Whilst there are some Gucci very good up scale restaurants and just over priced restaurants. There are snow reasonable priced mountain and village restaurants. Notable are self service restaurants at Cascade on la Fornet sector and Marmottes on Belvarde sector.

Second time visiting the Tignes/Val-dIsère region. As an advancing beginner there are plenty of runs that I am confident experiencing while my more advanced partner can spread his wings with some of the more advanced runs. Although busy there always seems to be enough space to spread out across the mountains.

Scenery amazing.

Perfect location.

Will be returning next year.

All round great result, albeit slightly unfriendly for beginners no real friendly nursery slopes into the village from high.

La Folie Douce massively overrated, although the other bars more than make up for it.

Le XV the best pub for a pint in the eve.

You need deep pockets for this resort. Otherwise the skiing is amazing. Stayed at the La Samovar hotel which was beautiful. Ski in/out.If your eating out book a restaurant the day you arrive as everywhere gets booked up in high season. Hotels foid was really great on half boardLunch isn't cheap but the many places to eat in the mountains gives great choiceThe skiing is the best we had in ages. Going up to the glacier is amazing. The que was horrendous though so get there in the morning as fast as you can ski. There more than enough ski runs for even the fastestest skiers including Tignes.Avoid school holidays the transfer time can be 9 hours by car as they implement a 20 minute red light on the roads . Get a train transfer takes 2 hours then a taxi upto resort 40 minutes. Will go again despite the cost.
