What Skiers Say About Flaine

Flaine attracts predominantly families and intermediate skiers, with many reviewers praising its proximity to Geneva airport (typically 90 minutes) and reliable snow conditions due to its north-facing bowl at altitude. Users consistently mention wide, well-groomed pistes suitable for beginners and intermediates, efficient lift systems with minimal queuing, and good ski schools (particularly ESF). The resort's brutalist architecture divides opinion but is generally accepted as functional rather than picturesque. Reviewers frequently note limited nightlife and après-ski options, describing the atmosphere as quiet and family-oriented. Several users highlight good value compared to other French resorts, though some mention crowded runs during school holidays and flat sections that challenge snowboarders.

Went over the (long) weekend 24-27 January. There was light snow overnight so most slopes weren't groomed leading to bumpy slopes later in the day (can be quite fun and/or intimidating depending on your skill level). The ski area is quite varied - I am an intermediate skier and the Grand Massif region suited me well, plenty of blues and reds.
Some nice restaurants on the slopes with great service but I advise to book, particularly if you're in a large(ish) group. Try the Pente a Joules, Le Chalet (top of Salon) and La Luge a Teran.
The period that I skied was quite busy, particulary on the 'access/homewards' slopes towards Flaine (Grand Vans was particularly crowded), Samoens, Morillon. If you want quieter slopes head off towards Samoens early and then then up the Flaine side for the afternoon.
We stayed at the RockyPop hotel, nice enough, friendly and helpful staff with decent spa area.
Ate at Le Michet, and Bauhaus, both of which I would recommend (althoug service at Bauhaus was very slow).
Overall I would go back, but will try to pick a quieter time if possible!

We had a lovely trip to Flaine and we were all impressed with the slopes. There isn’t a huge amount of village level restaurants and the high rise design wasn’t for us. We would likely return if the price was low but we would love to see a better range of apres.

Absolutely adore Flaine. Been going since the early 00’s and can safely say it’s the best ski resort I’ve been to. Great skiing in the bowl but easy access to the rest of the Grand Massif ski area if you want a bit more variety. Not the prettiest buildings to look at, but who cares when the skiing is great and the beers are flowing?!

We stayed at a hotel called Totem. It was luxurious - great food - and genuinely ski in- ski out. 5 minutes from the nearest lift, less if you're good at doing that skating thing on skis. It was more than I needed but worth the money.

I liked the Bauhaus art and architecture around the village.

The skiing was fantastic. It's well worth exploring over the hill to Morillon, Les Samoens, Sixt and Carroz. Lots of great days out to be had.

Morilllon blues and greens are great for beginner/ intermediate skiing. We found a red called Fred in Flaine that we ski'd repeatedly.

Great family resort and excellent for learning.
Not a massive choice of bars and restaurants and is not the most lively. Hotels are concrete tower blocks so not pretty but runs return back to the bottom of town so great to meet up with the group.
Not many runs.

We stayed in Flaine at the beginning of January and while it was bloomin' freezing, it was also quite fun. The snow conditions were a bit rubbish, but we managed to find some lovely slopes despite it all. There was a great mixture of wide and narrow, as well as steep and shallow runs, and access to the rest of the resort was great and easy to navigate - we never had to worry about when we were getting back to base camp. It is a very family-friendly resort, so take that into consideration whether you're planning on a 12-kid holiday or a lads trip. The pubs and restaurants around us were very nice, with a wide range of entertainment which was fun. Would definitely recommend packing extra thermals just in case it's -15 degrees again but otherwise was very fun!

Great ski resort lots of amazing slopes. Good value for money vs other french resorts, although food still very pricey. Black runs were a bit dangerous but maybe thats more our skill level

Family friendly resort.
Mainly self catering apartments.
Excellent value and perfect if you are learning.
That being said, because it’s quiet, the off liste doesn’t get tracked out and loads to play around in.
As a family of four, it’s big enough area to keep everyone interested.
Pretty much zero apres.
Quiet and not a party town.

Flaine is amazing as a family friendly resort. Unfortunately when visiting middle of December the snow was bad (to be expected) but had a great time.

Quite pistes before the Saturday pre Christmas. As snow was terrible off piste was not an option.

Can’t recommend flaine enough, I used to come here every year for about 10 years in a row, it’s where I learnt how to ski! It’s amazing for skiing and snowboarding it’s great for families there’s a great range of restaurants such as a hot rock place where you can cook your own meat at the table, it’s very accessible to shops if you like to self cater there’s loads of great restaurants on the Sloaps and an ice rink in the town centre theres a great area for sledding there’s an ice rink and a lift that takes you up from the village to near the resort, there’s loads of hotels, there are bars if you wish to drink, but this isn’t a loud party place it’s peaceful and surrounded by beautiful mountains, and it’s more affordable that other resorts in the area I couldn’t recommend it enough
