What Skiers Say About Flaine

Flaine attracts predominantly families and intermediate skiers, with many reviewers praising its proximity to Geneva airport (typically 90 minutes) and reliable snow conditions due to its north-facing bowl at altitude. Users consistently mention wide, well-groomed pistes suitable for beginners and intermediates, efficient lift systems with minimal queuing, and good ski schools (particularly ESF). The resort's brutalist architecture divides opinion but is generally accepted as functional rather than picturesque. Reviewers frequently note limited nightlife and après-ski options, describing the atmosphere as quiet and family-oriented. Several users highlight good value compared to other French resorts, though some mention crowded runs during school holidays and flat sections that challenge snowboarders.

Flaine has a lot to offer and has a great snow record despite it's relatively low altitude. Those looking for miles and miles of cruising pistes should perhaps look elsewhere as the lower lower parts of the larger Grand Massif area can suffer in warmer temperatures but for those looking for off-piste fun who can make the most of an area it's fantastic. Also excellent for families with it's central bowl, hard to get lost, or lose children!

Great ski resort could just do with a better ski park and tree runs but other than that some great off piste runs.

Overall ,good resort ,some great ski in/ski out accommodation .
Original part has very brutalist architecture.
Large enough ski area.
Only one main link to other villages so link lifts get way too crowded at peak times.

Excellent family friendly ski resort. Big shout out to Pierre and Vacances Premium DHelios. We stayed for a week here and the accommodation was perfect. Little apartments, ski lockers with heated boot warmers and most definitely ski in/ski out.
Very accessible ski area with something for all levels of ability. The ski school was excellent and my daughter grew in confidence over the week.

Flaine is a great resort, as not as busy as some of the more popular holiday destinations and has a good mix of pistes for every type of skier and snow boarder.
More than 90% of slopes open even this late in the season (late March 2024) although due to the recent warm temperatures the lower slopes at 1600m become slightly slushy if sunny.
Night life is limited but is aimed at the family and true hardcore skiers who dont want to ski with a hangover.
Of note a lot of the French ski here which is a good indication that is this a value for money resort and is frequented by a lot less tourists.

Large varied ski area. Decent off piste options. On piste grooming was good, but a bit slow to make some areas skiable following a big dump of snow. Good access from the airport.

Not the most Alpine looking resort but the Bauhaus architecture has its own charm. Slopes are varied and lots of long, gliding runs with occasional steeper technical sections. Access to lower tree lines slope in the wider grand Massif a ski area and some lovely intermediate slopes throughout.

We were lucky to have two powder days, these were fantastic. The off piste section at the top of the resort was amazing. The rest of the week was very icy due to no snow but freezing conditions. However this didnt tamper the overall feel of the resort. We went out of school holiday times and the slopes on occasion had no one on them, lots of wide sections and some narrow, great mix and great fun. Very small snow park however Carroz was great. Overall fab

Flaine is a great resort with every type of skiing there I loved hitting the ski park and the off-piste runs the most, the resort is very well maintained and set up and there are normally little to none queues for the chairlifts and gondolas I would rate the resort a 4/5 as it is awesome great for anyone learning and for very good skiers.

A lovely resort which reaches 2500m which secured good snow conditions all year round. Some great off piste within the Flaine area and a gorgeous 14km run from 2500m down to 760m

Flaine is a resort in the huge Grand Massif ski area. Its unique in that its not amazingly high compared to some other high altitude French resorts but it sits in a bowl that seems to collect all the surrounding weather making it incredibly snow sure. Its a purpose built resort which has a (purposely) modern brutalist architecture - which people love and hate in equal measure. Personally I love it. The bowl itself has masses of skiing with powder fields, small fun parks and instagrammable views of Mont Blanc at the top of Les Grandes Platieres. My favourite run is the blue mephisto all the way down from the top of the Aup de Veran cable car. The little standing 2 person cable car is a fun way to get to Flaine Forest. Outside of the Flaine bowl the choices are endless where you can reach the resorts of Les Carroz, Morillon and Samoëns - these are great to have different options for lunch. We loved the piste side snack bars in Morillon for a quick lunch to fuel us. Flaine is also set on a couple of levels - all this is easily negotiated due to the in town pedestrian funiculars that connect the levels. Nightlife is limited in Flaine with most of the action centred on The White bar which is great for apres beers, does hearty food and carries on partying into the night with live music. Their is a cinema in town which does the odd English film and a ten pin bowling centre which offers another night out. The main restaurants also sit along a row at the bottom of the slopes in the square where children sledge at nighttime. My impression is that Flaine isnt high on the radar of Brits meaning that Ive always found it much quieter than other big french resorts.
