What Skiers Say About Châtel

Châtel is reviewed primarily by intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders from the UK who value its position within the Portes du Soleil network, providing access to 650km of pistes across France and Switzerland. Users consistently highlight well-groomed pistes, efficient lift systems with minimal queuing outside peak periods, and a traditional French village atmosphere that feels family-friendly and less commercialised than neighbouring resorts like Avoriaz. The resort's lower altitude (1200m) creates variable snow conditions at village level, particularly late season, though higher terrain remains more reliable. Several reviews mention an abundance of button lifts in certain sectors, which some boarders and less confident skiers find tedious. Après-ski is described as quiet or limited compared to livelier resorts, though adequate restaurants and bars exist.

A good option for a quieter resort, good bus access to the main lift hub, you can get there by lift as well, just takes longer. From the main hub it's very easy to access the rest of the Portes du Soleil. Not a lot of restaurants and bars, but what there is is very good.

Ive been skiing here most of my life. Its a great family resort having learned to ski here and progress. As Ive got better some of the limitations are its small apres scene. Access to portes du soleil is great. Some excellent tree skiing on the mountain bike tracks but very dependent on snow conditions. Very busy during uk and French holidays. Ive been skiing in many of the high altitude purpose built resorts and I would choose this every time (as long as the snow is good)

5 stars for sure: this village has it all. Access to a vast ski area covering two countries, cute houses (no big flats), traditional French cuisine, and a local farmer where you buy cheese for your fondue after a day of skiing. Would recommend.

About 90 minutes from Geneva airport, Châtel is in the heart of the huge Franco-Swiss ski domain called the Portes du Soleil, with 200 lifts and 650km of pistes linking 14 valleys & resorts, including Avoriaz, Morzine, and Les Gets in France, as well as Champéry, Torgon, and Morgins across the border in Switzerland. Chatel is a location that makes it perfect for a ski holiday. Chatel has easy and relaxing tree lined pistes to the extreme, most famously, Chavanette, the "Swiss Wall" which is actually categorised as an Orange run (too severe to be Black). Skis and snowboards are both popular and not just on the piste. There are several fun parks where you can show off your stuff in a half pipe or jump on and off the obstacles through the twisting forest runs of The Stash. And with all that mountainside there is plenty of off-piste to entertain the more adventurous skier. Guides are available from the ski schools & will be happy to take you to the best locations on any given day but it is advisable to book ahead at peak times. In the late afternoon, evenings, and if you still have some energy keep going down the floodlit Linge piste, way into normal après-ski time! There are several ski schools to suit your needs, from the ubiquitous ESF as well as ESI & BASS. Most of the instructors speak good English as well as several other languages. For food, drink and apres ski you are spoiled for choice in Chatel on or off the mountain, with several rated restaurants. There is a cinema and baby-sitting facilities are a par for teh course in most hotels and chalets. There are plenty of alternative activities to keep children, adults and the whole family occupied if a day off skiing is needed. Husky rides, snow shoe guided trails, sledging, and skating are all there - even diving under the ice, if ice fishing is your thing. The Form d'O swimming pool and spa is open daily and gives a break away from the the snow completely - or swim in it's open air pool if you want that open air relaxation, alternatively, a visit one of the cheese farms to taste the world famous Fromage d'Abondance should be high on everyone's list.
