What Skiers Say About Châtel

Châtel is reviewed primarily by intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders from the UK who value its position within the Portes du Soleil network, providing access to 650km of pistes across France and Switzerland. Users consistently highlight well-groomed pistes, efficient lift systems with minimal queuing outside peak periods, and a traditional French village atmosphere that feels family-friendly and less commercialised than neighbouring resorts like Avoriaz. The resort's lower altitude (1200m) creates variable snow conditions at village level, particularly late season, though higher terrain remains more reliable. Several reviews mention an abundance of button lifts in certain sectors, which some boarders and less confident skiers find tedious. Après-ski is described as quiet or limited compared to livelier resorts, though adequate restaurants and bars exist.

Having grown up skiing in Châtel every year, it is a place close to my heart. The skiing is great with plenty of great places to eat. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a family resort.

Chatel is a beautiful village attached to the huge Portes du Soleil ski area. In its own Chatel provides a great ski experience but with the PDS on its doorstep it becomes a mega ski.

The village is quaint and traditional but big enough to have a huge choice of places to eat and drink. A fab aqua centre with indoor and outdoor pools. Bowling, ice rink night skiing are just a few of the other activities available.

Ive skied at Châtel since I was 5, the town is well equipped with ski shops/restaurants and the bus route to Châtel and Pre Le Jeux is ace! The slopes are well looked after and considerate for all levels - Pre Le Jeux has a wider range of skiing ability slopes for more advanced.

A lesser known resort in the giant Portes du Soleil area. Chatel benefits from snow sure north facing slopes, extensives snow making, lots of off piste and runs to suit all levels.

Weve been skiing in Chatel for 10 years and love the resort so much we bought an apartment there. The PDS area is vast and caters for every level/type of skier and boarder. We particularly like the fact that Châtel is still an Alpine town with working farms and no high-rise buildings. The town has a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants that cater for all types of visitors.

Its a nice place, we went in February half term and it didnt feel as busy as other places. It was quite warm but the snow held up well higher up. Was a bit slushy lower down in the afternoons but still enjoyable. Great views and lots of runs. We stayed in a catered Chalet. But when we did try to prebook an evening meal out one night, we struggled to find somewhere who would cater for 8 people.

The perfect place for a lads holiday or a family one, Chatel offers the best of both worlds. Would 100% recommend checking out the club on a Wednesday night. Or a local pub called avalanche

As an intermediate-advance skier, and only on the hill for 5 days total, Ive found Chatel to be an absolute gem for almost every skier/ snowboarder. I visited with my girlfriend who had never seen proper snow before - she absolutely raves about the experience and ski school. While she was in lessons I tried to get to know the resort and was not disappointed. The park was very well maintained for you park rats out there. I think it merges the traditional ski experience with modern tech - almost never had a problem with wait times. The only wait I really had was at open time where the cues were quite long, in fairness though this happens at any large ski resort. In terms of accommodation you really do have your pick of the litter, tons of options many of which are close enough to walk/ ski to the lift. Apres is not the typical experience you might get somewhere like Chamonix but there were plenty of great bars with good music, and tight but fun dance floors. All around good option for families, solo skiers, couples, really anyone.

Châtel is a beautiful French ski resort, part of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, 650km in total. Its a hidden gem, pretty village , not too big and has a lovely feel about it. Several bars and plenty of restaurants. There are various options for skiers & boarders to link up to numerous resorts in France and Switzerland offering a huge variety of different slopes, great beginner areas in Super Châtel & Pre La Joux , fun snow parks for skiers & snowboarders in Avoriaz and the challenging Swiss Wall to tackle. Châtel sits at 1200 metres, easy links to Avoriaz which is at 1800 metres.
Annual music festivals in March across the Portes du Soleil.
I would say Châtel is a family friendly resort, not too commercialised, quaint with a very French feel, with an understated apres ski vibe. The ski area is one of the best!

Good range of pistes despite poor snow conditions. Plenty of options to stop and eat and drink on the snow and indoor picnic option is great for those on a budget.

Châtel is a lovely small and sleepy little resort. Although small it has a great connection to avoriaz via port du solei pass. Its attraction are the beautiful views amazingly groomed pistes and very welcoming locals. I would always recommend chatel as a resort. The tree runs are top notch and it accommodates all levels. Overall one of the best resorts Ive ridden in my life

Châtel is a wonderful resort for families and young children. It provides an excellent range of activities for all the family, however, if you are a young adult it can be quite hard to find something to do that suits you.

When I went to chatel, it was quite expensive to buy drinks and food, however if you have an apartment where you can cook it can save you a lot of money!
