What Skiers Say About Châtel

Châtel is reviewed primarily by intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders from the UK who value its position within the Portes du Soleil network, providing access to 650km of pistes across France and Switzerland. Users consistently highlight well-groomed pistes, efficient lift systems with minimal queuing outside peak periods, and a traditional French village atmosphere that feels family-friendly and less commercialised than neighbouring resorts like Avoriaz. The resort's lower altitude (1200m) creates variable snow conditions at village level, particularly late season, though higher terrain remains more reliable. Several reviews mention an abundance of button lifts in certain sectors, which some boarders and less confident skiers find tedious. Après-ski is described as quiet or limited compared to livelier resorts, though adequate restaurants and bars exist.

Went with a friend, both quite experienced but the other a snowboarder. Great atmosphere, loads of extra bits going on and family friendly. My kids would especially love the merry go round and the town itself had everything you needed a stones through from each other. Ski hire quick and reasonably priced and was directly opposite the shop to buy ski passes which was done without even having to speak to a human. Bus stopped directly outside my accommodation up to the lifts. Bought a pass for the whole PDS which would recommend to get best value for money and access to harder runs. Will definitely go back with the whole family next time.

I learnt to snowboard here and have been back several times now over the past ten years. My sister got into an accident a few years ago and the staff in restaurants, emergency response team and hospital were all amazing and supportive throughout. A large variety of slopes and difficulties, beautiful views and beautiful resort:) The bars are amazing with wonderful staff, and so many tasty options to eat out!! 10/10 would recommend and be returning again.

Fantastic traditional alpine village with skiing for all levels. Very family friendly and great ski schools. New lifts in the super chatel area means no need to travel to pre la joux any more to access the portes du solieux
Even in half term weeks the areas around chatel are less crowded than other resorts with minimal lift queues.

Spent 3-4 weeks here over several years from early to late season. Loads to do with a full Porte de Solei ski pass including lots of chutes through the woods and the infamous happy valley for lots of off piste (but still in resort bounds) for jumps and fun. However slopes do become heavy with snow piles in the late afternoon no matter what time of year. In late season the lower runs arent worth doing but earlier in the season you have the full height to go at. You do need to watch the map if you want to do a resort tour to work out the connecting lifts. But overall awesome and well worth coming back to.

Châtel is a unique skiiers paradise being at the opening of the Portes du Soleil, an extensive ski region in the Alpes. It provides easy links to The Portes du Soleil is Europes largest cross-border ski area. With more than 650 km of slopes and 12 French-Swiss resorts. Châtel is nestled between mountains and has great transportation links to the ski pistes and opportunity for door to door skiing. There are buses throughout the village to access all ski points of entry. We found a variety of charming bars and restaurants as well as an extensive variety of accommodation to suit all budgets. A cable car runs from the center to the Super-Châtel piste, which has panoramic mountain views. Châtel is great for beginner skiers and snowboarders but there is some superb terrain for both expert and intermediates. We found powder, carefully prepared runs, mogual fields and gentle beginners slopes. For boarders and skiiers of all abilities including groups, families, solo skiiers and aprés ski lovers alike you will love this piece of ski heaven!

We love Chatel and have skied there three times in the last 10yrs. It has nice cruisy blues and fun reds. It can be a bit busy first and last thing but there's lots of space to spread out. Id like less button lifts along the top but thats my only criticism

Gorgeous area and connected to the port-de soel ski region with access to a avoriaz and skiing between both france and switzland loads of fun and challenging runs with plenty of off piste sections to ski and plenty of lifts going over both challenging runs and easier runs that sort ski groups of various abilities, being quiet low in recent years the end and start of the season can be quite challenging ranging from really icy runs in the morning higher up and then really slushy runs closer to the bottom towards the end of the day, plus a free parking spot in the ardent bowl if you buy the full region ski pass, with a vast amount of runs you could spend a couple weeks there and not get bored (trust me Ive done it) and with both family friendly bars and lively ones theres something there for everyone and cant not mention the igloo bar on avoriaz where you can get a pint of peroni for 4 during there happy hour (mid afternoon).

Nicest Village in Porte Du Soleil, has advantage of improved connectivity to Linderettes ( reopening of Gabelou lift) area and onwards to Avoriaz via Linga for sweeping cruising pistes without having to traverse through Avoriaz.

Plus, links to Swiss side for near deserted pistes for lazy cruising. More of a village atmosphere and much better connected than Morzine and Les Gets which are out on a limb.

Plenty of tough routes including famous Swiss Wall for more adrenelin.

Great location, easy to get to by road or air.

Something for everyone, big area with guaranteed snow, expansive off piste area, good snow parks.

Pistes are well groomed, quiet off peak, lifts have good speeds, busy at the bottom of Avoriaz to get back Chatel.

Excellent food up the mountain and in the villages.

Enjoy!!

I think the resort Has lots of options for après ski and restaurants especially in the small town areas
Near the back there are plenty of runs which are always abandoned. And there is a very good selection of black runs.bin terms of off piste the selection isn't amazing but if you scout out where you want to go and plan to cross country ski a bit you can find plenty of areas with great off piste action.

I have been going every year at least 3 times to Chatel since 2007 and I have learnt to ski there. It is in my opinion one of the most well rounded resorts I have ever been to. It has a great selection of beginner through advanced slopes within the portes du soleil connections. Chatel itself is a very family friendly resort with an exceptional selection of ski schools and beginner slopes. It has a great selection of restaurants in the town that offer an array of cuisines for every type of eater. Great parking for those with cars near slopes but more importantly an excellent bus network that can take you all throughout the resort.

Really good value base within the middle of Porte du Soleil - accommodation often much cheaper than Avoriaz/Morzine, but you are just a couple of lifts away from the same skiing (plus Chatel skiing is excellent in its own right)
