What Skiers Say About Chamonix

Chamonix attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders, with many reviewers noting the resort is less suitable for complete beginners due to steep, challenging terrain. The resort comprises multiple separate ski areas accessed by free buses, which reviewers mention frequently as both convenient and occasionally frustrating. Off-piste skiing and steep groomers receive consistent praise from advanced riders, whilst the town itself is described as lively with good restaurants and bars, though dining and accommodation are repeatedly flagged as expensive. Several reviewers mention that runs can be narrow and that lift infrastructure feels dated in places. Weather-dependent snow cover at lower elevations and avalanche-related closures are noted across multiple visits.

Stayed and skied un Les Houches. Great ski resort for me and my son. My son had never skied before and the pistes were perfect for him to learn as well as having enough difficult for me to enjoy. Very friendly resort and not busy. Plenty of links to other resorts also.

Loved my time in Chamonix! We had a group of 20 with every skier at different levels. Sometimes we would get together after our lessons and have fun skiing together. I loved apres ski and partying in the chalet after and having a lovely spa evening to relax our calves also. Just wholesome in every way imaginable.

I live and work in Morzine and did a day trip to Chamonix at the start of the week. The views driving into Chamonix town were breathtaking. Super easy to park up and ski. Ski pass was free for us because we have the Port du soleil pass. Skiing was amazing - quiet pistes mid January, snow conditions so good, wide pistes and plenty of places to sit in the sun.

A fabulous all round Resort With great intermediate And advanced skiing and boarding. - On and off piste. Traditional alpine town, great après ski. Not ski in and out, a shuttle bus transports you up and down the valley to the different ski areas. Love it!

The perfect resort for all abilities. A great variety of blue and red runs. From families to groups this place has everything. The town is a perfect mix of retail therapy and restaurants. Prices are reasonable and the likes of Folie douce hotel and Chambre Neuf are perfect apres ski venues for the most lively amongst us.

Chamonix has its pros and cons. Its a Mecca for mountaineers and extreme skiing and its easy to see why. The back country access is second to none. If you want to climb the peaks or abseil into the couloirs around Mont Blank then this is the place for you. The ski fields are spilt up unlike most resorts in the alps and transport is needed to switch between them. Each offers something unique but are on the small side. A good skier will ski each within a day easily. The resort is known for its steep and deep skiing and its safe to say that some of the piste skiing is consistently very steep. Chamonix falls down on its transport options. These get you to and from each field and are essential use for a weeks skiing. The trains often only run once an hour and arent included in the price of the lift pass. (Make sure to let the conductor know you need a ticket as soon as you get on the train. Do not wait for them to come to you or youll get a fine.) The train stops also arent that close to the bottom lift so expect a walk wherever you go. The busses are truly shocking. Youre lucky if they come at all and when they do, they will be packed. Expect long queues and forget the schedule. Ive waited over an hour at a major stop that was supposed to have 3/4 busses come in that time. The best way is to have your own car but even then, expect a 20min journey to take over an hour sometimes due to traffic in peak weeks. If you want to get extreme and push your limits in the mountain then come here. If youre going to spend 75% of your time on piste then look elsewhere.

Unreal place for off-piste/backcountry skiing. Make sure you go with a guide though, there are tons of crevasses.

Chx is an amazing ski area if you have the ability to ski blacks (especially if you have the skill to enjoy off piste). Otherwise you may find the maps repetitive as therere a lot of ways that require you to be a good skier in order to travel between zones with out relying totally on gondolas or even worse, all the ski-buses!!

Pretty town with plenty to do for non-skiers. Average lift system, but the skiing felt limited after a couple of days without getting fairly long bus rides to other nearby ski areas. I wouldnt recommend this resort massively.

Chamonix is a nice resort and plenty of different mountains to choose from. However, I felt that the mountains were quite disconnected and each individual mountain was quite small (with the exception of brevant and flegere). The main pro of this is there is lots of variety and you can go from one mountain on one day and be in another (maybe in a different country!) the next. Im somewhere between beginner and intermediate and felt that some of the mountains had very very few options for me; grands Montets in particular only had a few red runs that were appropriate The vallee Blanche was not open when we went but for people who want to do this famous off piste thats clearly a big plus of the resortOverall food is very good, but not a lot of options on each mountain
