Overview

Levi Ski Resort in Finnish Lapland stands as one of Northern Europe's most enchanting winter destinations. Located 170km north of the Arctic Circle, this magical resort combines reliable snow conditions with a wide range of activities beyond just skiing. The resort area spans across Levi Fell, a modest yet perfectly formed mountain with a network of 43 runs across all difficulty levels.

What sets Levi apart from many European resorts is the tranquillity of its slopes. Our reviewers mention that lift queues are virtually non-existent, with most users waiting no more than a couple of minutes even during peak times. With an elevation spanning from 202m to 531m, Levi offers a respectable 329m vertical drop.

The Snomad community rates Levi exceptionally well, with an overall rating of 4.42/5. It scores particularly impressively for family friendliness (4.79/5) and beginners (5.00/5), making it an ideal choice for those new to winter sports or families looking for a stress-free ski holiday.

The Skiing in Levi

Levi's ski area features 43 well-groomed pistes with 19 intermediate runs and 21 advanced runs. Though not massive by Alpine standards, the quality of the snow and efficiency of the lift system more than compensates. The resort boasts 2 gondolas, 1 chairlift (heated, as one user points out), and 24 drag lifts.

The resort earns 4.58/5 for groomed runs, with users praising the immaculate slope maintenance. For more advanced skiers, the Olympic-level black run offers a proper challenge. As Selous, an intermediate skier, notes: "With an Olympic level black run you can challenge yourself in the morning whilst still enjoying the other activities Levi has on offer in the afternoons and evenings."

Freestyle enthusiasts will appreciate the snow parks (4.24/5), which cater to various skill levels. Paige, an expert snowboarder, enthuses: "The snow features were very nice and friendly to ride for people of all levels whether they're learning freestyle or a pro."

For powder seekers, Levi scores 4.18/5 for powder zones and 4.00/5 for off-piste. Melvin, an advanced snowboarder, highlights "multiple off-piste areas with good snow due to the consistency of snowfall," while Mayt, an expert snowboarder who's visited ten years running, praises the "great off-piste runs and no ski police."

Eating Out in Levi

Levi performs well for eating out (4.26/5), with several users commenting positively on the food options. The resort offers a mix of slope-side restaurants and venues in the town centre, with many serving traditional Finnish cuisine alongside international options.

Stuart, an intermediate skier, describes the restaurants as "superb," while Daren, an advanced skier, notes: "There are a number of restaurants and bars with a varied selection of food on offer and the prices are pretty reasonable if you go for local stuff."

A unique feature of Levi's on-mountain dining experience comes from Jason, who mentions: "There are little huts dotted about the slopes with fires in to get warmed up and cook your bratwursts which are replenished with logs daily." Melvin specifically recommends the "nice, easy and well-priced burger bar at the south point."

The Après-Ski in Levi

Levi's après-ski scene scores 3.83/5, which might reflect its more laid-back, family-friendly atmosphere compared to rowdier Alpine resorts. However, several users still praise the quality of the nightlife.

Eduardo, an intermediate skier from the United States, enthuses: "Finnish may be the nicest I've ever met, après was amazing and can say the same for nightlife." The bars in Levi tend to be relaxed and welcoming, perfect for unwinding after a day on the slopes.

What makes Levi unique is that the après activities extend beyond traditional drinking and dancing. Many visitors combine skiing with Arctic experiences like husky sledding, reindeer rides, and Northern Lights viewing, creating a more diverse evening entertainment program than you'd find in typical European resorts.

Levi Ski Resort, Finland for Families

Levi truly excels as a family destination, earning an exceptional 4.79/5 for family friendliness. The resort's combination of uncrowded slopes, excellent ski schools, and additional winter activities makes it perfect for family holidays.

Selous raves: "Levi is an amazing ski resort for a mixed group. Particularly when skiing as a family." The quality of instruction also receives high praise, with the resort scoring 4.56/5 for ski school quality.

Jo, an intermediate skier, offers comprehensive insight: "Great resort for families who want laid back skiing. No queues for lifts, plenty of nice blue/red runs, good ski school for group or private lessons... perfect for beginners-intermediates and families."

Gemma adds that there's "something for every ability. Blue runs beautiful smooth run and feels christmassy and lots activities to enjoy with kids." The additional winter activities, including reindeer sleigh rides, husky sledding, and visits to Father Christmas, make Levi a magical winter wonderland for younger visitors.

Accommodation Options in Levi

Accommodation in Levi receives high marks from Snomad users, with 4.74/5 for accommodation options. The resort offers everything from high-end hotels to self-catering apartments and traditional log cabins.

A significant advantage for visitors is the accessibility of accommodation to the slopes. Jo points out that "most accommodation is an easy walk to lifts and you can easily store kit at bottom of the slopes," eliminating the need for frequent shuttle buses or long walks in ski boots.

The compact nature of the resort means that most facilities, restaurants, and activities are within comfortable walking distance of accommodation options, making Levi a convenient choice for all types of ski holiday.

Environment and Sustainability in Levi

Levi has made tangible commitments to environmental stewardship, with Finland's reputation for clean energy extending to its ski areas. The resort operates with a focus on minimising its environmental footprint while maintaining high-quality facilities.

The ski area benefits from Finland's extensive renewable energy use, with wind and hydroelectric power significantly contributing to resort operations. The relatively low altitude and natural snow reliability reduce the need for extensive artificial snowmaking compared to many Alpine resorts.

Levi's compact design encourages walking rather than driving, with most facilities accessible on foot from the village centre, reducing transportation emissions. Public transport options connect well to major Finnish cities, allowing visitors to reach the resort without needing a car.

There are a range of different level slopes. The slopes tend to be a fair bit quieter than the Alps, although not nearly as high.

Skiing: - Incredible ski area, long runs and no ice. Lifts are quiet - most I've ever waited is 2 minutes. Snow Park good for all levels. Haven't been off piste however I've heard it's good and since it's more of a rolling hill it's not too dangerous either. Other Activities: -Wide range of activities, cross country skiing, sledding, skidoos, and so much more. Can be expensive but I've never felt disappointed with any activity. Cost:-Quite expensive however it's brilliant, I've been a few times now and I will be going again.
