Snow quality is frequently praised when conditions are good, though several reviewers note that the resort can be lean on snowfall compared to other Rockies resorts and that icy patches or bare spots appear in lighter seasons. Marmot Basin is easily the best ski resort in Alberta, and very good even compared to BC resorts. Marmot has been my favourite resort in Canada for years after living in Alberta and BC. Marmot seems like a smaller resort on a map but has a surprising amount of terrain. I skied there consistently for five years and never got bored. The quality and diversity of the terrain is also surprisingly good. They do well with grooming and trail maintenance but the true beauty of marmot is found off-piste. The tree skiing is great and there are a lot of super fun hidden gem spots. There are also large powder glades that are just a short hike from the top of the higher elevation chairlifts on the resort. Yes, you have to take your skis/board off and hike but no touring or backcountry gear is required as the trails are maintained and these areas are inbounds. These areas are never busy and always have untouched snow. There is also some serious side-country terrain that can be accessed with avalanche gear and permission from patrol. The terrain parks are good, and there are mini parks located around the mountain that are great for learning or messing around in good spots so you can link park runs together. The main park might be a little small for expert park riders but they do a really good job with the quality of the features. This resort truly has it all for any skill level or riding style in my opinion. I love skiing there.
Unfortunately there is no accommodation options on the mountain, if that is important to you, but the town of Jasper is only about a 20 minute drive in good weather, and there is a free shuttle from a few stops in town (Jasper is fantastic too). There is also a fantastic parking lot setup on the mountain that makes parking a breeze when you arrive. There is a restaurant/bar and cafeteria at the base of the mountain and one at mid-mountain as well which are both good and have plenty of space to store your bags if you bring your own lunch. One of the biggest perks of Marmot is the crowds. Even on the holidays and busy weekends Ive never had to stand in a lift line for more than a few minutes and the runs are rarely over crowded. Ive never had a bad experience with the staff or any other patrons on the hill. The vibe on the mountain is great and I think it is partly due to the lack of crowds. Finally, the price to ski here is relatively cheap compared to other resorts, especially in BC. I would say Marmot has the best value of any ski resort Ive been to for the quality of skiing you get, especially if you are a student or get their Escape card, which gives you half off lift tickets, and can be applied to tickets already using the student discount! I could go on about this resort, I hope you make it out there!!
