Top 10 Things to Do in Verbier (for skiers & non-skiers)

Known for its premier offering in everything from off-piste to partying, Verbier is a glittering jewel in the Swiss Alps that everyone should experience at least once. Forming part of the largest ski area in Switzerland (the Four Vallées) Verbier goes beyond the usual postcard-perfect panoramas and big backcountry to offer something for everyone. This Alpine favourite is teeming with things to see and do, including Michelin-starred dining, indoor climbing and impressive art galleries. We’ve rounded up the top 10 things to do in Verbier below.

Ski the 4 Vallées

Of course, the obvious place to start is with the skiing. Over 400km of slopes, epic off-piste, and stunning alpine scenery beckon from beyond timber-framed windows. The birthplace of the Freeride World Tour (and the annual host of the grand finale - the YETI Xtreme Verbier,) the terrain here is a mecca for free riders and is the place for getting steep and deep. The most popular off-piste is found in the pretty and powdery Vallon d’Arby, while those seeking out the lesser-tracked lines might opt for the backside of Mont Fort. The pistes have an equally great reputation with great runs for all levels and the lifts run with the efficiency of Swiss clockwork, no surprise there. Fans of relaxed elevenses after a few early morning runs can get their fix of hot chocolate and cheesy goods at various slopeside cabins.

Snowshoeing in a Winter Wonderland

Want an active experience away from the slopes? Snowshoeing is an idyllic option which will allow you to escape the crowds, breathe in the pristine air and soak up the scenery. With a history spanning back thousands of years, snowshoeing used to be a necessity for those living in alpine environments. Today, it’s a great way to work up a sweat without needing to learn to ski or snowboard. In Verbier, there are 19 different routes suited to different levels, allowing you to head out on a trail that suits you. If you’d prefer to get your bearings on a guided tour, there are plenty of ski schools and adventure experts offering this.

Stay Active on and off the Slopes

The village is home to a huge sports centre, Centre Sportif de Verbier, where you’ll find a wealth of indoor activities. A great option for non-skiers or when the weather closes in, the sports centre offers tennis, a weights room, a squash centre, an indoor pool, a wellness centre and an expansive climbing wall framing a multi-sport court.

Spa with a View

Steam and sauna are an integral part of any ski holiday and in Verbier, they take wellness very seriously. Think high-alpine chalets with steaming outdoor pools and mountain views impressive enough to rival the lair of any bond villain. Most of the public spa facilities are located within luxury hotels such as the W Hotel and Cordée Des Alpes but most will allow you to use the services provided you’ve booked a treatment. Other spa facilities include the wellness area in the Mondzeu building, which has a sauna for those over the age of 16.

La Tzoumaz Toboggan Run

Got a need for speed that lasts long after you’ve set down your skis? Enjoy one of Switzerland’s longest sled runs with a 700m vertical descent. Perfect for holidaymakers of all ages, the La Tzoumaz Toboggan Run offers a fast ride, with a dedicated track from Savoleyres to La Tzoumaz. If you’re looking for a more relaxed ride, Les Esserts offers a separate, gentler option, ideal for younger children and families. These two runs are located in different areas, so plan accordingly based on your preferred level of thrill!

Mont-Fort Glacier Views

A year-round destination, the Mont-Fort Glacier offers 360° panoramic vistas at 3,300m. Reached via the Jumbo followed by the Mont Fort cable car, the glacier offers awe-inspiring views across iconic peaks including Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Dent d’Hérens. There’s an igloo bar and a viewing platform up top, making it a welcome excursion for pedestrians, and there’s also the Mont 4 Zipline, a 1,400m long journey which drops 383m and allows you to reach speeds of up to 100km/h!

Fine Dining

The Swiss are known for bringing luxury to all experiences, and dining is no exception. From cosy mountain chalets like Chez Dany and La Marlenaz to high-end eateries including the Michelin-starred La Table d’Adrien, foodies will be in paradise. Make sure to experience an authentic alpine fondue during your stay and sample some of the exquisite chocolate treats on offer at La Galerie du Chocolat.

Soar Across the Skyline

Paragliding in Verbier is a high-octane way to experience the Swiss Alps from a breathtaking birds-eye view. With its ideal wind conditions and stunning mountain scenery, Verbier is a top destination for both beginners and experienced paragliders. Tandem flights with professional instructors allow anyone to soar over the Bagnes Valley, taking in panoramic views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and the Rhône Valley. The most common takeoff spot, where you’ll take flight into the big blue, is Les Ruinettes at 2,200m, offering a thrilling descent back to the village below. Flights are available year-round, but there’s something really special about looking down on a glittering mountainscape during winter.

Party Like its 1970

The après ski and nightlife scene in Verbier has a legendary reputation. Between towering bottles of champagne and fountains of spritz, you’ll likely spot the rich and famous basking in the atmosphere after a day on the slopes. Farm Club has been a revered Verbier institution since it opened in the seventies (think Studio 54 on snow,) while popular après spots include Le Rouge, Ice Cube, Pub Mont Fort and Farinet.

Soak up Local Culture

Once a village with little more than cattle farming to its name, Verbier is now brimming with boutiques, art galleries and artisanal outlets. There is a large art and photography scene in the village, perhaps thanks to the crossover between creative types inspired by the great outdoors and extreme sports enthusiasts capturing their skills on camera. In terms of events hosted by the village, there is an annual art summit, classical music concert and weekly markets where you can get your hands on local delicacies.
