The Skiing in Northstar California

Northstar's terrain breakdown – 13% beginner, 60% intermediate and 27% advanced – shows its strength as a mid-ability resort. The mountain features well-maintained slopes with particularly good grooming, earning Northstar a strong reputation for well-manicured pistes.

Intermediates will feel most at home here with the lion's share of runs, while beginners have dedicated learning zones. Advanced skiers should head to the back side of the mountain, which offers steeper pitches and more challenging terrain. As one of our reviewers, Sam, notes: "Head to the backside for steep single black groomed bombers and some nice tree runs. Better yet, head to the Martis Camp area for some of the best groomed black runs in Tahoe."

The resort scores quite well for tree runs (3.88/5 with several users praising this aspect. Mitch, an advanced snowboarder, mentioned that "off-path offers deep snow and clean tree-runs," while another user simply stated "the tree runs are the best."

Northstar particularly shines for terrain parks (3.94/5, with multiple users calling it "the best park in the west." The park crew receives special praise from Sam, an intermediate snowboarder, who notes that they are "definitely the highlight of the resort."

"Northstar has a good variety of runs across three mountain faces. The main frontside is definitely more family and beginner oriented. The backside and lookout have longer and steeper pitches"

"Decently sized mountain (more snowboard friendly I would say) not too big but not terribly small. A bit of a walk to the gondolas from the parking lots."

Eating Out in Northstar California

The resort receives a moderate score for eating out (3.36/5, with mixed reviews from our users. The village area offers various dining options, though several reviewers mention high prices as a common theme.

John, an intermediate snowboarder, notes that "the village has a lot of food and drinking options though a bit expensive." This sentiment is echoed by Sam, who warns that "food is ruinously expensive" and suggests packing your own lunch to save money.

On-mountain dining follows the typical North American resort model with cafeteria-style options. The base village provides more variety, though as Mark points out, "on mountain food is not great and very expensive."

Nearby Truckee (about 20 minutes away) offers additional dining options with more authentic character. As one reviewer mentions, it's "a wonderful western town with true atmosphere" that's worth exploring for those with a car.

The Après-Ski in Northstar California

Northstar scores a moderate 3.35/5 for après-ski, reflecting its more subdued nightlife compared to other Tahoe resorts. This isn't a destination for wild parties, but rather for relaxed evening gatherings.

Sophie, an intermediate snowboarder, explains: "If you're looking for a fun après experience, Northstar is not really a big party spot. They do have DJ and drinks on the weekends, which I went to and had a great time at, it's just not super packed. But you can tell they're trying to introduce more of that to the culture!"

The European-inspired village offers a central gathering place with fire pits and occasional live music. As Patrick, an intermediate skier, notes, "It has a very European ski village vibe but you're gonna pay a pretty penny due to it being in California."

Several reviewers mention that the atmosphere is more focused on families than party-seekers. Megan, an advanced skier, states directly: "There also isn't much of an après scene." For livelier nightlife, visitors often head to nearby Truckee.

Northstar California for Families

Northstar California truly excels for family holidays, earning an impressive rating for family friendliness (4.28/5. This family focus is mentioned repeatedly throughout user reviews.

"This is a very family friendly mountain," states Megan, an advanced skier. Geoffrey, another advanced skier, adds that it's a "great family resort" though "on the pricier side." The emphasis on families shapes everything from the terrain to the village activities.

The ski school quality (4.28/5 receives excellent marks, with Muhammad, a beginner snowboarder, sharing that "instructors were great and extremely helpful. Definitely got me hooked on the snowboarding bug."

Beyond skiing, the pedestrianized village offers family-friendly activities like ice skating and s'mores by the fire pits. Daniel, an intermediate skier, points out that "this is also a good resort if you have non-skier friends as it has fat tire biking."

A notable advantage for families with medical concerns is the on-site medical facilities. Geoffrey mentions that when his group had an injury, "the full service onsite hospital was very convenient and professional."

Accommodation Options in Northstar California

Northstar offers accommodation options (3.85/5 that cater primarily to the upper end of the market. The resort village provides ski-in/ski-out convenience, though at premium prices.

Sophie notes that "We stayed at the resort which made everything super easy, and they have a great shuttle service and request system as well." This convenience comes at a cost, however, with several reviewers mentioning the high prices.

Arnav, an intermediate skier, explains that "Accommodation at the lodge itself is pricey and the nearest other options are not too great." Peter, an advanced skier, highlights the "amazing accommodations overall with the Ritz Carlton right next door" but acknowledges "the high prices to stay around there."

For more budget-conscious visitors, staying in nearby Truckee or even West Reno (as suggested by Sam) can provide significant savings while still allowing reasonable access to the slopes. The trade-off is the daily commute and potential parking challenges.

Environment and Sustainability in Northstar California

Northstar California, as part of Vail Resorts, operates under the company's "Commitment to Zero" initiative, which aims to achieve zero net emissions and zero waste to landfill by 2030. The resort has invested in energy-efficient snowmaking equipment and water conservation systems.

Vail Resorts as a whole purchases renewable energy credits to offset their operational footprint, though specific on-site renewable energy generation at Northstar is limited. The resort also participates in forest health initiatives within the Tahoe Basin to mitigate wildfire risk and improve watershed health.

Public transport options include shuttle services from local accommodation and regional bus connections, helping to reduce private vehicle emissions. While moving toward sustainability goals, Northstar's environmental efforts appear to focus more on corporate-level initiatives than resort-specific innovations.

Northstar is a very family friendly resort. It has a beautiful base village and ample parking. I was there when there was plenty of powder and the backside of the mountain provided great tree and powder runs. The piste here are pretty easy and there are not really any super steep runs. Looks like a great place for families. The backside was great ! There were several runs that had all to myself.

This is a very family friendly mountain. Because of this, I would say that the runs are rated more difficult than they are (ie a "black" at northstar is more of a steep blue at other resorts). There also isn't much of an apres scene. The lift lines can be atrocious, but if you can get up to the more difficult sections of the mountain, you can avoid them. It is one of the most expensive lift tickets in Tahoe, and I think you can get more value for your money at Palisades or Kirkwood if you're going to pay for a day pass. If you have Epic, might as well check it out.

Decently sized mountain (more snowboard friendly I would say) not too big but not terribly small. A bit of a walk to the gondolas from the parking lots, aside from that the ascent is pretty straightforward. Terrain parks dont have the craziest features but they definitely get the job done. Beautiful backcountry trails, awesome powder days. Does get decently busy on weekends, nice and slow on weekdays.

When does the ski season start and end in Northstar California?

Northstar California typically opens in late November (usually around Thanksgiving weekend) and closes mid-April, depending on snow conditions. Several Snomad users mention that mid-season offers the best experience, with one advanced snowboarder noting that "mid-season is the best for most open areas and groomed trails." The resort's family friendliness (4.28/5) makes it particularly busy during holiday periods and weekends.

Is Northstar California good for beginners?

Northstar is fantastic for beginners. With a beginner-friendly rating of 3.33/5 and excellent ski schools (4.28/5), it's ideal for those starting out. Multiple Snomad users praise the instructors, with Muhammad noting they were "extremely helpful" and "got me hooked on snowboarding." The resort offers 13 dedicated beginner runs and Sophie describes it as "definitely family and beginner friendly." Just be aware that weekend crowds can mean longer lift queues.

Is Northstar California good for intermediate skiers?

Yes, Northstar California is great for intermediates, scoring 3.89/5 for intermediate terrain. Our users praise its wide variety of blue runs, particularly on the backside of the mountain and East Ridge area. Sam, an intermediate skier, recommends heading to Martis Camp for "some of the best groomed black runs in Tahoe." The resort offers excellent progression opportunities with 60 intermediate runs, though it can get crowded on weekends according to several reviewers.

Is Northstar California good for advanced skiers?

Northstar isn't ideal for advanced skiers. While it scores 4.10/5 for advanced terrain, most users report that black runs are more like steep blues elsewhere. One Snomad community member noted, "I would say the runs are rated more difficult than they are." The backside offers better options with steep single black groomed runs, and the Martis Camp area has some of the best groomed black runs in Tahoe. Expert terrain is limited though, scoring just 1.67/5 for experts.

Is Northstar California good for non-skiers?

Northstar offers decent options for non-skiers but has mixed reviews. The village has "a lot of good options and activities," according to Katherine, with shopping and dining available. However, Mark noted that "what should be a good village is deserted with most storefronts empty." The resort scores 4.28/5 for family friendliness and offers alternatives like fat tire biking, mentioned by Daniel. It's quite pricey though, which multiple users point out might not deliver value for non-skiing visitors.

Several users mention it's quite pricey though, with Sam noting "food is ruinously expensive and so is lodging nearby." For a more luxurious stay, the Ritz-Carlton is located slope-side. For better value, some users suggest staying in nearby Truckee or even West Reno for more affordable options.
