What Skiers Say About Sölden

Sölden attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders seeking reliable snow conditions and extensive terrain. Reviewers consistently highlight the glacier access, long wide runs, modern lift infrastructure, and vibrant après-ski scene. The resort draws mixed-ability groups and those looking for high-altitude skiing with good snow coverage throughout the season. Common criticisms include crowding during peak periods, expensive lift passes relative to terrain size, and challenging home runs in warm conditions. Several users note the resort feels less traditionally Austrian and more commercialised than comparable destinations.

In Brief:
Wide open runs, with a great deal of intermediate and carving potential, competing with huge crowds, and a slightly forced apres scene. Food is cheap and cheerful to gourmet, depending on preference.

The resort features a large range of red runs, dotted with blacks and blues. In honesty I often failed to distinguish between reds and blacks, as all slopes were plowed daily and conditions didnt really allow for moguls to form. For some I'm sure this would be great. For me it reduced the type and range of terrain available. What the resort does offer however are expansively wide and accessible pistes to the majority of levels.

The resort is not of significant size and with a generally outdated (slow and low capacity) and oddly arranged lift system, I felt it extremely difficult to escape the crowds (I visited the 1st week of March). Frequently I would find a quiet slope only to discover it could only be accessed again either by a T-bar or by taking a circuitous route to get back to the top. Ultimately this resulted in either a lot of time spent in queues or a lot of time on slow lifts - or both!

On the lift systems, I also found the lifties to be rather lazy, they rarely got involved in assisting users, and on several occasions I found them sleeping. This isnt a problem with the resort as such, but it resulted in a certain level of chaos within almost all lift queues, to an extent I've not witnessed elsewhere.

Food options on the mountain were reasonable and generally affordable <£20 lunches, <£10 if you skip the beer and favour self service.

Where the value for money falls down is in the ski pass. Its a huge £424 during the peak winter season, for a claimed >300km of piste. The catch is only around 150km of that is in Solden, the rest is dotted about in smaller resort accessible by bus. Yes, Obergurgl is worth a visit, but the other 3-4 resorts are too small for a day of good skiing on the piste.

On the apre. If you like the huge club scene, Solden town can offer this. Fire shooting out of the roof, heavy base, table dancing are all up for grabs.
If you like a calmer apre scene, its more difficult to find.
Personally I struggled to see the Austrian in Solden and it's Austrian Apre I like most. The big hotels and loud club like bars which dominate the town just left generic western taste in my mouth.

End of the day, the place is convenient for access from Innsbruck and wont break the bank with a decent deal (if you can forget about the ski pass). But would I go back? Probably not.

Great location with wonderful glacier boarding. Good ski bus access throughout the resort and to Obergurgl and Hochgurgl as well for a quieter day.

There is great Apres Ski and the James Bond Museum is also worth a visit. Good selection of bars and restaurants on the mountain and very good lift service.

Definitely more of a vibrant resort, may not be the best choice for families though!

Big resort with plenty of options for all abilities. The lifts are super efficient to get you to where you want to be. Can feel crowded however being able to ski 2000m in one run is unbelievable. There are options for downhill, off piste, ski touring, snowpack, cross country, racing, toboggan and even paragliding. To elevate the experience you can visit the Ice Bar featured in the James Bond film Spectre. Highly recommend this resort if youre looking at staying in one place.

The resort has a friendly feel to it. When we were there it had just got a much needed dump of snow. Liked the live band venue, but didnt go to the disco type places. Overall Id certainly go back. The 007 exhibition was stunning.

Such a good variety of slopes, a lot of longer runs, rather than ones over in 10 seconds. Very helpful and friendly staff around, great selection of restaurants on the slopes. Would definitely revisit.
