Sundance Overview

Tucked into Utah's Provo Canyon, Sundance Ski Resort offers a refreshing alternative to Utah's larger, busier ski destinations. With an overall rating of 4.20/5 from our community, Sundance delivers quality skiing without the crowds typically found at neighbouring resorts.

Founded by Robert Redford, this mountain haven combines excellent skiing with stunning natural beauty. One Snomad community member describes it as "absolutely the most magical resort in Utah... it looks like something out of a hallmark movie."

Spanning from 1,859m to 2,514m above sea level, Sundance features 72 runs across a diverse terrain that surprisingly packs a punch for a smaller resort. While it may not receive as much snowfall as higher-elevation Utah resorts, its location provides spectacular views of Mount Timpanogos that several users specifically mention.

Our users rate Sundance particularly highly for family friendliness (4.69/5) and expert terrain (4.50/5) - an interesting combination that speaks to the resort's versatility.

"Sundance is always a great option! While it is a tad expensive, it’s gorgeous on the slopes and in the hotel. All the wood cabins and big trees are pretty all year around but very much snow covered in a few feet of snow."

The Skiing in Sundance

Sundance's 72 runs are nicely distributed with 15 beginner trails, 23 intermediate runs, and 31 advanced/expert options. The mountain is serviced by 5 chairlifts, which are predominantly fixed-grip triples that some reviewers note are on the slower side.

The resort is effectively split between front and back mountain areas. As Eric, an expert skier explains: "The terrain has great variety and can be fairly difficult at the higher elevations." The front mountain caters brilliantly to beginners, while the back mountain delivers more challenging terrain including steep bowls and tree runs.

Mike, an expert skier, raves about the "steep bowls and great powder stashes that last days after a storm," while Kaden highlights "Bishops Bowl and others along the far east" as having "the best snow especially the double blacks."

For off-piste enthusiasts (3.70/5), Sundance offers plenty of options, particularly in the back mountain area. Burke notes: "The back mountain area of the mountain has probably the best snow and offers some steeper terrain and some more diversity with trees and moguls."

The resort scores solidly for tree runs (3.42/5) and has a modest terrain park, though Kayden suggests they "need better parks and to make it more of a priority."

"They have very good bunny slopes, and also have extremely hard runs with double black diamond ones."

" I know that he does a very good job with it and all the mountain is clean but if your someone that just likes to do tricks I really enjoy the park here and the jumps that are in the tree runs."

Sundance scores well for eating out (3.81/5), with several Snomad users commenting positively about the food options. The resort includes a summit restaurant that provides dining with spectacular views.

Burke tells us: "Sundance's food is amazing and is a great place to go and eat after a long day of skiing." Megan, a beginner skier, adds: "The food at the lodge is reasonably priced and delicious."

The dining options receive consistent praise, though Braxton advises: "I would recommend bringing food because the food there is extremely expensive and not big servings," showing there may be varying experiences depending on where you eat.

Justin, an advanced skier, simply states that Sundance offers "great food," suggesting that quality is a consistent theme across the resort's dining establishments.

The Après-Ski in Sundance

Sundance's après-ski scene (3.83/5) has its own unique charm, offering a more relaxed alternative to the party atmosphere found at some larger resorts. John, an advanced skier, notes: "the après skiing is awesome" and adds that "the night skiing is so aesthetically pleasing."

The resort maintains its family-friendly character through its après offerings, with a focus on quality rather than wild partying. Several users mention the "local feel" which contributes to a more intimate après experience.

Chase, an advanced skier, appreciates that "it brings a homey small town feel to the slopes," suggesting that the après scene is more about unwinding than going wild.

It's worth noting that some users point to Sundance's curious blend of local mountain culture with upmarket touches - as Eric observes, "It feels like a small local resort, but also has valet parking."

Sundance for Families

Sundance shines brightly for families, earning an outstanding family friendliness rating (4.69/5) from our community. The resort offers excellent terrain for learning and progression, with dedicated beginner areas that are well-separated from more advanced zones.

Bradley, an intermediate skier, highlights: "This is an amazing place to ski with very family friendly choosing many different types of runs. They have very good bunny slopes, and also have extremely hard runs with double black diamond ones."

Brock notes that "It is cheaper than most ski resorts and family friendly," while Knox simply calls it "a very good family friendly ski resort." The resort also scores well for ski school quality (4.37/5), with Joseph sharing a particularly moving story about how a fantastic instructor helped him learn to ski following surgery that had put him in a wheelchair.

The relatively quiet slopes, mentioned by several users, add to the family appeal. Megan loves that "The runs are never too busy" which is ideal for families looking to build confidence without the pressure of crowded pistes.

"This is a very good family friendly ski resort and it allows skies, boards and even snow bikes and has very fun runs"

Accommodation Options in Sundance

Sundance provides solid accommodation options (4.13/5) with a variety of choices to suit different budgets and preferences. While our users don't specifically detail accommodation types, they do reference the overall resort atmosphere which extends to its lodging.

The resort layout is relatively compact, making access to lifts straightforward from most accommodation. Justin notes you can "park within 100 yards of Jakes lift to start your day," highlighting the convenience factor.

The resort offers a shuttle service, mentioned positively by Megan: "I love using the shuttle," which connects various accommodation areas and reduces the need for driving once you've arrived.

Ben appreciates Sundance's accessibility: "You don't have to wait 3 hours and a drive up the canyon like other resorts in Utah," suggesting that the resort location is advantageous for those staying in nearby towns as well as on-site.

Environment and Sustainability in Sundance

Sundance Resort has roots in environmental stewardship, reflecting founder Robert Redford's conservation ethos. The resort operates on a smaller footprint than many comparable destinations, which inherently reduces its environmental impact.

Sundance is always a great option! While it is a tad expensive, it’s gorgeous on the slopes and in the hotel. I got a season pass for the 24-25 season and I have loved it so far. It gets a little crowded on the weekends but nothing too bad, as students at BYU we love going during the week when possible. Also shoutout to the ski patrol they were super nice when I had to get hauled off the back mountain a few weeks ago.
