Whitefish Mountain Resort is a hidden gem in NW Montana. Accessible by Amtrak (Empire Builder stops in Whitefish) and by air (Glacier park International Airport). The ski resort is 9 miles up the mountain from Whitefish town. For those staying in town, there is a free bus (S.N.O.W.BUS) that runs between the town and resort every 15 minutes or so. There are many lodging options (condos and homes) up the mountain, some managed by Whitefish Mountain Resort, others by VRBO and AirBnb. Whitefish town has similar options as well as a number of hotels and motels. Ski passes are among the most reasonably priced Ive run across, and there are options for purchasing in advance that lower the price further. The Base Lodge has a rental center, bar, restaurant, locker rental, gift shop, and lots of indoor seating for eating and relaxing. Great ski school for young and old, regardless of experience level. Access to the summit (6,800 ft.) recently was made significantly easier when a second high speed chairlift was added. Lift lines at those two chairlifts are rarely more than a minute or two long, and once on the mountain, shorter yet. The runs are spread around a north and south face dropping from the summit. Morning snow is usually softer on the back (north) side as the warm afternoons melt the front side, leading to some ice overnight. Both sides are predominantly blues and blacks with greens being mainly cat tracks. Blacks are split between trees and steeps with a few double diamonds thrown in. The front face offers a lot of real estate to traverse as well as access to the terrain park, which has numerous sizable jumps and an area with rails.A great option for dining on the mountain is Hellroaring Saloon. Rustic place with ski artifacts from the resorts history, great food, fun bar, and terrific view. Another option for lunch while at the resort (in addition to restaurants at the Summit House and Base Lodge) is Ed and Mullys. Located at the base of the terrain park in a small area called the Village that includes a few shops and a small convenience store, it offers typical pub fare. Finally, the place for enjoying a beer and apres ski camaraderie on the mountain (in the Village, right at the S.N.O.W.BUS stop) is the Bierstube). There are numerous excellent dining, drinking and shopping options in Whitefish town. Snow is predictably good with around 300 inches annually, temperatures rarely extreme, but fog not uncommon. Very family friendly resort still relatively under the radar that continues to expand and enhance its experience.
