What Skiers Say About Kirkwood

Kirkwood attracts predominantly advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders seeking challenging terrain and powder. Users consistently praise the steep chutes, bowls, technical runs, and tree skiing, with many noting it receives some of the best snow in the Tahoe region. The resort is described as less crowded than nearby alternatives due to its remote location, appealing to locals who prioritise riding over nightlife. Intermediate riders find suitable terrain but note the mountain skews toward more advanced skiing. Common complaints include limited food options, slow fixed-grip lifts (though two express lifts exist), minimal après-ski and lodging, difficult access during storms, and limited parking on busy days.

The employees are free friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Other than weekends, there are little to no wait for the lifts. Some of the best steep groomers. Usually the best snow in the area.

Kirkwood is one of my absolute favourites in Tahoe. Its a but of a smaller resort, with less vertical per lift, but does it ever pack a punch with every little bit you get. I like to think of it as the locals choice in NorCal; that resort that is slightly off the beaten path and a little less touristy - but really delivers where it counts. The backside lift, The Wall and Cornice Express just open up so many possibilities you didnt think possible with the fewer number of lifts. On top of that, there arent many bottlenecks or single points of failures - chances are if the resort is open, you wont be stuck because one critical lift broke down - and I love that.

Great steeps, powder bowls, sidecountry laps. Get there early or you will be parked out. Grab a cheeseburger at sunrise and enjoy the backside.

I live a thousand miles away from Tahoe and still consider Kirkwood to be my home resort. Loved and skied there for years.. Seriously some of my favorite terrain of all time, whether youre an intermediate skier that wants a taste of what its like above the tree line, or if youre trying to rip down some of the most varied and technical terrain you could imagine then this is the place for you. The best skiing, the best vibes, and the best people.
