Heavenly Overview

Heavenly is a sprawling ski resort that straddles the California-Nevada border on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. What truly makes this resort special are the breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe that can be admired from many runs, particularly on the California side. As Stev notes, "Don't forget to look up while you are skiing. The views of Lake Tahoe are also pretty good."

The resort spans multiple peaks across two states, with a top elevation of 3068m and a base elevation of 2185m. This impressive ski area encompasses 113 runs served by 14 lifts, including 2 gondolas and 12 chairlifts. Heavenly earns an overall rating of 4.20/5 from our community, with particularly high scores for groomed runs (4.46/5), family friendliness (4.42/5), and tree runs (4.25/5).

"Heavenly is a great resort with a lovely village. It is quite pricey, but the views are incredible and runs are very fun especially if a storm blows through!"

The Skiing in Heavenly

Heavenly offers a diverse range of terrain with 113 runs split across 8 beginner, 68 intermediate, and 31 advanced routes. The mountain is particularly well-suited for progressing intermediates and advanced skiers, though the layout can be challenging to navigate for first-timers.

One Snomad community member liked the "good variety of intermediate through expert terrain," while another pointed out that "The beginner runs are sort of limited, narrow, and spread out or separated from other beginner runs." The mountain's design features long traverses between different areas, which can be tricky for those unfamiliar with the layout.

The tree skiing is frequently mentioned as a highlight, especially after fresh snowfall. Colleen, an advanced skier, raved: "Tree runs are fantastic - great spacing and variable pitch." For those seeking challenges, the Mott and Killebrew areas on the Nevada side offer expert terrain. As Sam notes, "Black runs are mostly glades or ungroomed mogul runs. Expert terrain can be found in the Mott and Killebrew areas in Nevada."

The resort also scores well for off-piste (3.91/5) with Manuel commenting that Heavenly offers "Off Piste runs in the famous Motts Canyon." However, several users mention the mountain's susceptibility to wind holds, which can affect lift operations and access between the California and Nevada sides.

"This place has so many blue runs and we had a lot of fun exploring the mountain from east to west. The ski school at the California Lodge was amazing."

"There is a good variety of intermediate through expert terrain. The tree skiing is great. It is amazing on a powder day. If you know your way around or are fortunate enough to follow someone with local knowledge, the off-piste skiing is also fantastic. "

Eating Out in Heavenly

Heavenly scores well for eating out (4.11/5), though reviews suggest that on-mountain dining can be hit-or-miss. Sharon candidly advises: "Food service isn't great on the mountain; they actually ran out of food in the early afternoon during spring skiing several days this year. Bring your own food!!"

The real dining gems appear to be in South Lake Tahoe itself, where options are plentiful. The Heavenly Village at the base offers various restaurants and cafés within walking distance. Sam mentions that "Lodging and food options are plentiful in South Lake," while Gustavo notes the village "offers a variety of food, drink, and activities."

A unique feature highlighted by Samantha is "The DJ set at one of the mid mountain lodges is an experience that should not be missed if you enjoy a mid day drink and bite with a fun vibe."

"My friend and I had such a great time exploring the village and eating at the amazing restaurants in the area. We tried Hell’s Kitchen 10/10, Saltgrass Steak House 4/10, and Wolf 1000/10."

The Après-Ski in Heavenly

Heavenly boasts a strong après-ski scene (3.88/5), with options both on the mountain and in South Lake Tahoe. The resort offers a unique après experience spanning two states, with different vibes on each side.

Christopher describes it well: "California side very nice, not loud but bars and restaurants good, five minutes walk Nevada side wild clubs casino's bars, party time." This dual personality makes Heavenly suitable for different après preferences.

Randy, an expert skier, enthuses: "South Lake Tahoe was rockin with night life!!!!" The presence of casinos on the Nevada side adds another dimension to evening entertainment not found at many other ski resorts. As Luke points out, "with casinos only a short drive away, a show or party is very accessible."

Heavenly Village serves as a hub for après activities, with Gustavo noting: "The village at heavenly at night gets very full of people and fun to spend the night at a bar I had met a lot of people and made lot friend." Several users mention the gondola base as a good spot for post-skiing drinks.

Heavenly for Families

Heavenly scores extremely well for family friendliness (4.42/5), making it a top choice for family ski holidays. The resort offers excellent ski school quality (4.03/5) and scores highly for beginners (4.38/5).

Joan, an intermediate skier, shares: "Wonderful place to ski with the family! Something for everyone and absolutely beautiful! We were a family of four and all of us (varying levels) enjoyed the slopes at Heavenly!" Many users mention the resort's ability to cater to mixed-ability groups.

Seth notes that Heavenly has "one of the best beginner areas that I've seen in the US," and Delaney adds: "The ski school was great, as a beginner adult I didn't feel awkward or embarrassed."

Beyond skiing, Heavenly Village offers family-friendly activities like ice skating, mini-golf, and a movie theatre. Manuel Jimenez points out: "In the winter, the outdoor mini golf turns into an ice rink Next to the movie theater. Also, walking distance from the gondola are four large casinos, Harveys also offers a very large exciting arcade for the kids underneath the casino."

Accommodation Options in Heavenly

Heavenly receives excellent marks for accommodation options (4.44/5), with a wide range of choices to suit different budgets and preferences. The resort area offers everything from luxury properties at the base to more affordable options nearby.

Sharon explains: "There are tons of lodging choices, from high end right at the base to budget options across the street." This flexibility makes Heavenly accessible for various traveller types. Dylan adds: "The surrounding area, South Lake Tahoe, has lots of hotels to stay in that are walking distance to the village and casinos if you want to gamble."

Some users recommend staying on the Nevada side for better value. Christopher suggests: "I recommend staying on the Nevada side as it's a lot more cost-effective. Stagecoach ski lift has free parking and is not that far from Carson City."

Access to the slopes varies depending on accommodation location. Many properties are within walking distance of the gondola, while others require a short drive. Resort shuttles help connect accommodation with lifts, as Colleen notes: "Hotel and Heavenly shuttles were easy to use and frequent."

Environment and Sustainability in Heavenly

Heavenly's environmental initiatives focus primarily on efficient snowmaking operations and forest management. The resort has invested in modernising its snowmaking systems to reduce water and energy usage while maintaining quality snow coverage even in challenging weather conditions. Fritz notes: "Snowmaking is superb, very important in a season like this current one. As well as grooming, corduroy every morning."

As part of Vail Resorts, Heavenly participates in the company's "Commitment to Zero" programme, which aims to achieve zero net emissions and zero waste to landfill by 2030. However, specific details about Heavenly's individual sustainability practices are limited in user reviews, suggesting this might be an area where more visible initiatives could enhance the resort's environmental profile.

Based on our user reviews, these are the top 5 favourite aspects of Heavenly:

Based on our Snomad community's reviews, here are the top five things they love about Heavenly:

  1. The spectacular views of Lake Tahoe - Almost universally praised as "unmatched," "breathtaking," and "the best of any ski resort." Sam says the views alone make Heavenly "unmatched" with "fantastic lake views from anywhere on the California side, to striking desert views on the Nevada side."

  2. Tree skiing - Particularly on powder days. Colleen, an advanced skier, raved about the "fantastic tree runs with great spacing and variable pitch," while Stev, an expert skier, called the tree skiing "amazing on a powder day."

  3. Variety of terrain - Users appreciate the range of options for different skill levels. Heavenly Cons: What Snomad Skiers Say Could Be Better

Based on our user reviews, these are the top complaints about Heavenly:

Looking at the Snomad user reviews, these are the top 5 complaints about Heavenly:

  1. Difficult navigation and connectivity - Many users struggle with the mountain layout, especially for first-timers. As one advanced skier mentions, "If you're new to Heavenly, good luck finding your way around." The long traverses between areas and between the California and Nevada sides can be particularly frustrating.

  2. Wind-related closures - The resort is prone to wind holds affecting key lifts. Soukhin, an advanced skier, points out: "The Nevada side is more connected to the California side by one single chairlift. Therefore, whenever there is high wind, the chairlift stops rendering the mountain sides disconnected which creates a lot of chaos and limitations."

  3. Crowds and lift lines - Several reviewers mention the resort gets very busy, especially on weekends and holidays. Talia warns: "Lots of people and quite pricey so be warned if going on the weekend or peak season."

  4. Limited beginner terrain - While there are beginner areas, they're described as "limited, narrow, and spread out." Sharon notes, "I don't think it's the best place for beginners, mainly because so many of the lifts don't service any beginner terrain."

  5. Expense - Multiple users mention the high cost of lift tickets, food and accommodation. Otto, an advanced snowboarder, says: "Heavenly is incredible fun but also expensive... It can be several hundred dollars a day and riding just the gondola alone is over $100 now making the price lackluster at best."

Not a lot of snow in California this winter (so far) we’ve had one good storm leaving heavenly with a decent base layer. Their snowmaking is is top notch and provided some decent powder sections on their runs. Their park sections aren’t great and only two small sections on the entire resort. It always feels more like a skier’s mountain here. Crowds weee low being the middle of the week - no waits on the lifts. Their alcohol is pretty pricey - cocktail $20. We enjoy coming to heavenly though for the town and easy access to the gondola. There are a ton of hotels at different price points, but if it’s in your budget it’s great walking outside and straight on the gondola.

Pros: large resort, modern detachable lifts (mostly), 3 base areas, decent snow quality, many mogul runs, trees etc, family friendly resort.

Cons: extremely complex navigation, many "valleys" from which getting out is hard, not good enough parks for different levels. Large crowds in some areas, not enough challenging terrain, no bowls, quite a few flat traverse areas.

This place has so many blue runs and we had a lot of fun exploring the mountain from east to west.
The ski school at the California Lodge was amazing, they made my kids a special vega lunch and they learnt a lot! The ski school on the other side at the Gondola was a different experience, they started very late and were back teaching them how to put skis on and not focusing on building the skills they already had. They also didn’t get a lunch because they were vegan so finished the day hungry, cold and tired.
We always rent from the California Lodge and the gear was exceptionally good this year. I got to try the Nordica back fastening boots which were so comfortable!
Loft lines after the holidays were no problem at all. I wish they had vegan options at the restaurants on the mountain.

FAQs Skiers' Most Asked Questions

Heavenly FAQs: Skiers' Most Asked Questions

Is Heavenly snow-sure?

Heavenly isn't considered exceptionally snow-sure compared to other Tahoe resorts. While it has good snowmaking capabilities, its lower elevation (bottom at 2185m) makes it more susceptible to fluctuating conditions. One Snomad community member noted, "It can be a little hit-or-miss with natural snow, and they rely heavily on snowmaking early season." However, the resort manages snow well, with Fritz, an advanced skier, praising their "superb snowmaking" and "corduroy every morning" grooming.

What mountain range is Heavenly part of?

Heavenly Ski Resort is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, sitting on the border between California and Nevada. It overlooks Lake Tahoe from the south shore, offering the stunning lake views that many Snomad users rave about. The resort stretches across multiple peaks within this range, creating its vast and diverse terrain that spans two states.

When does the ski season start and end in Heavenly?

Heavenly typically opens late November to early December and runs until mid-April, depending on snow conditions. Our users note the resort makes excellent use of snowmaking to ensure a longer season, with Fritz mentioning their "superb snowmaking" capabilities being crucial during lighter snow years. Early season might require downloading via gondola rather than skiing to the base, but the higher elevation terrain usually maintains good coverage throughout the season.

Is Heavenly good for beginners?

Heavenly scores well for beginners (4.38/5), but the layout can be challenging. Delaney, a beginner skier, notes there are "super great beginner green/blue runs that are actually interesting with twists and turns." However, several users mention the green runs are somewhat limited and disconnected. The ski school gets good reviews, with Katherine saying "instructors and beginner area were all great and helped get my confidence in skiing up." The signage could be better, especially where trails of different difficulties intersect.

Is Heavenly good for intermediate skiers?

Heavenly is fantastic for intermediate skiers, scoring 4.27/5 out of 5. With 68 intermediate runs, it offers plenty of long, well-groomed blues with incredible views of Lake Tahoe. One Snomad community member noted, "It has some of the best blue groomers anywhere," while Brian mentions "the skiing is always great." Just be aware that getting between the California and Nevada sides requires some planning due to possible wind holds on connecting lifts.

Is Heavenly good for advanced skiers?

Heavenly is excellent for advanced skiers, scoring 4.40/5 for advanced skiing. The resort offers fantastic tree skiing, challenging mogul runs, and quality off-piste terrain. Mott Canyon and Killebrew Canyon provide expert-level challenges. One Snomad community member highlighted the "great variety of intermediate through expert terrain" and mentioned that "if you know your way around, the off-piste skiing is fantastic." Be prepared for long traverses between areas, but the spectacular Lake Tahoe views make it worthwhile.

Is Heavenly good for expert skiers?

Yes, Heavenly is excellent for expert skiers, scoring 3.78/5 for expert terrain. The Nevada side offers more advanced options, with Mott and Killebrew Canyons providing challenging terrain. Fritz, a skiing instructor at Heavenly, praises the "superb snowmaking and daily corduroy grooming." Several users mention outstanding tree runs and off-piste areas after fresh snowfall. As Joseph notes, "Awesome powder skiing with the ability to ski anywhere." Just be aware that wind holds can occasionally limit access to expert zones.

Is Heavenly good for non-skiers?

Heavenly offers decent options for non-skiers. The gondola ride provides breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe that Maddie, a non-skier, found enjoyable. South Lake Tahoe town has plenty of activities including shopping, restaurants, indoor entertainment (like magic shows and mini golf), and casinos on the Nevada side. Katherine mentions "it's generally a good place to bring even your friends who don't ski or snowboard." While the resort focuses on skiing, the surrounding area provides enough entertainment for those who prefer to stay off the slopes.

Is there snow at Christmas in Heavenly?

Heavenly typically has snow at Christmas, though coverage can vary each season. Our users report reliable snowmaking and grooming capabilities, with Fritz noting "snowmaking is superb" even in challenging seasons. The resort sits between 2,185m and 3,068m elevation, which helps maintain conditions. While early season might not always offer full base-to-peak skiing, the mountain usually has enough coverage for enjoyable Christmas holiday skiing on many of its 113 runs.

Where should I stay in Heavenly and what type of accommodation is available?

Heavenly offers diverse accommodation options with an overall rating of 4.20/5. Our users note that South Lake Tahoe provides the most variety, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly motels, all within walking distance to the Heavenly Village gondola. The village area buzzes with restaurants, shops, and nightlife. For quieter stays, the Nevada side offers Holiday Inn Vacations with easy shuttle access and shorter lift queues, as one Snomad community member mentioned.

Heavenly Village is perfect for those wanting to be in the heart of the action. You'll find upscale hotels right at the base of the gondola, with everything you need within walking distance. One Snomad user loved the convenience of staying close to the gondola with immediate access to dining, entertainment, and shopping options. For families, this area scores well for family friendliness (4.42/5) with activities like ice skating and mini golf.

The Nevada side accommodations offer better value and less crowding. Christopher, an advanced skier, recommends this area for those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere while still having access to shuttle services. Stagecoach area lodging provides free parking and quick access to advanced terrain. Some users mention it's more cost-effective, with Dylan noting it's just a short drive to the casinos if you want nightlife without staying in the busier California side.

What's the best way to get to Heavenly?

For international travellers, the easiest route to Heavenly is flying into Reno-Tahoe International Airport (about 1 hour drive) or Sacramento International Airport (about 2 hours). San Francisco International is also an option (3.5 hours). From these airports, you can rent a car, book a shuttle service, or use the South Tahoe Airporter from Reno. Our Snomad user Chris notes it's "an easy drive from San Francisco Airport."
