What Skiers Say About Zermatt

Zermatt attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders seeking well-groomed pistes, efficient lift infrastructure, and high-altitude reliability. Reviewers consistently praise the extensive terrain, modern gondola systems, scenic runs with Matterhorn views, and the car-free village atmosphere. The ability to ski across to Italy (Cervinia) is frequently highlighted as a major advantage for varied terrain and cheaper dining. However, the resort is repeatedly criticised for high costs across accommodation, food, and lift passes. Several reviewers note limited beginner-friendly terrain, with blues sometimes feeling more challenging than advertised, and mention that lower runs can be narrow and congested, particularly at weekends.

This report is expensive but its worth it. Food choice and quality is amazing by far the best resort Ive been to for food. The village is so pretty also. Skiing is fab but just a pain having to get the train up to the slopes ( not the end of the world ) just takes longer to get up to the slopes epically if youre not staying next to the station. Hotel was fab and did offer lifts or you could get the ski bus it was just very busy.

Loved Zermatt. It is a resort you have to do once in your life. Ski areas are very separate and it is not a resort for beginners.
Skiing over to Italy was one of the best days with clear skies and sunshine.
The resort is large very environmentally friendly, being zero car. It can be very expensive, but you can still ski there on a budget.

Beautiful unspoiled resort with no cars just horses and carts. Beautiful scenery and great accommodation chocolate and pancake shops. The prettiest resort Ive skied at but fairly expensive. Night life lovely with cosy bars. The Matterhorn mountain is breathtaking and theres an electric train which is fast to use to slopes.

A beautifully picturesque resort. Snow sure, at high altitude and accessible by train, in fact, anything other than electric vehicles are prohibited from entering the town which adds to the tranquility.
There are plenty of modern, high capacity lifts and a charming funicular railway but at peak season these can still get congested. There is a wide range of slopes and plenty of km to cover for all abilities.
The town offers plenty of ski schools and hire shops alongside a wide array of high end fashion shops and restaurants.
The main downside is the cost. Unfortunately, Zermatt is mostly the playground of the rich with most accommodation costing way above average and the food and drink prices also reflect this. Not one to be done on a budget!

Zermatt was wonderful for a mix of great town and good on piste skiing.

The town is beautiful. The apres and nightlife is fun but more low key than French and Austrian alps.

The skiing is phenomenal on piste but off piste is limited.

Amazing lunch spots on the mountain with great views. Lots of quality reactants for dinner. Expensive but worth it.

Beautiful resort. The town was so pretty at Christmas.
Extensive skiing, especially when connection to Italy open. Mainly red pistes, so good for advanced skiers. Groomed pistes so as GS racer skier myself it made it very enjoyable. Off piste not too great - potentially due to early season.
Lovely on mountain restaurants e.g chez vroni or chalet Etoile. Overall fab skiing with beautiful backdrop of Matterhorn but expensive.

Zermatt had a lot of great skiing but can be confusing for your first visit. Food and drink are pricey to eat out. The views and scenery are great though, and the runs are long and challenging.

Zermatt is a wonderful place to spend time, whether on skis, board or just hanging out. Quiet, car-free streets encourage walking and exploring. The lift system is fast and efficient, and gives access to a huge and varied area of well-grromed slopes and exciting off-piste terrain. The bonus is that one is usually skiing with a constantly changing view of the Matterhorn in sight. Glorious!

Stunning ski resort with one if the best views in the world. Suggested to see once in a life. Very long and well maintained slopes and super efficient lifts allow you to ski many different areas in a reduced time. Suggested to check beforehand if the connection with Italy is open.
The city is amazing and as a plus it is car free. Downside is the price which is quite high, 110 franks for a day ski pass.

The experience was nothing short of spectacular. In the shadow of the Matterhorn, it was magical.

I will 100% return when possible and the accommodation used was very convenient and useful as a base for snowboarding.

Stunning resort. Accessible only via train. No cars allowed. Lots of electric vehicles to transport you to your hotel.
The views of the Matterhorn are amazing.
Skiing you have 3 options - gornergrat, sunnegga and klein Matterhorn.
Plenty of runs to select and the mountain restaurants are amazing.
Ended up at chez Vrony which is the place to eat and also have the best view of the Matterhorn. Also enjoyed Xmas dinner at the Blatten.
The village is full of shops and there are plenty of bars to enjoy apres.

Have been skiing every year in Zermatt for longer than I care to admit!
This resort is top notch for quality skiing, accomodation and dining. The apres-ski scene is lively, but not quite up to Austrian standards.
The snow is guaranteed, and you always have the option of popping over to Italy for a change (weather permitting!).
Will continue going to Zermatt as long as the old legs allow ;-)
