What Skiers Say About Zermatt

Zermatt attracts predominantly intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders seeking well-groomed pistes, efficient lift infrastructure, and high-altitude reliability. Reviewers consistently praise the extensive terrain, modern gondola systems, scenic runs with Matterhorn views, and the car-free village atmosphere. The ability to ski across to Italy (Cervinia) is frequently highlighted as a major advantage for varied terrain and cheaper dining. However, the resort is repeatedly criticised for high costs across accommodation, food, and lift passes. Several reviewers note limited beginner-friendly terrain, with blues sometimes feeling more challenging than advertised, and mention that lower runs can be narrow and congested, particularly at weekends.

Zermatt is a super luxurious and peaceful resort. Where the snow is all year round and in mid winter is amazing where there is a tonne of powder and lots of options for all levels. It’s amazing for the people wanting to ski in luxury and to experience skiing at its finest. I would say the snowpark isn’t the best there is to offer in the alps and the onslope apre ski is good however other places in the alps have better to offer.

Efficient lift system. Narrow home runs are busy. Fine if you’re intermediate. Can also get funitel down to resort. Not great for beginners. Great restaurants, but need to book. Well groomed pistes. Good snow quality. Beautiful town with a lot of shops. Expensive

Zermatt is one of the best places to ski in Europe, if not the world, as it has something for most people. There are some snow park areas and some off-piste terrain, however, I can't speak to the off-piste as it wasn't fully open due to the lack of snow coverage in December. Where the resort really shines, is long, wide open pistes. There is something for everyone: short and easy blues to practice, long cruisey reds for drills and carving, or steeper blacks to challenge yourself. The lift system is also top notch, efficient, and gets you everywhere.

The town of Zermatt itself is also a real gem. The town is car-free and everywhere is accessible by foot. It retains it's old school feel, but has everything modern that you need.

Zermatt is now one of my go-to international resorts.

Vast variety of snow sure slopes, which are not too crowded. Great slope side lunches but town eating dominated by hotels. Lift pass and rental expensive but worth it for the view of the matterhorn alone.

Beautiful atmospheric resort. Visited the Hexen Bar several times
Appreciated the traffic free streets.
Mountain restaurants were expensive, but were able to ski to the italian side for cost effective pizza.
The hotel was comforatble and close to the train
The morning view of the matterhorn from the train was stunning.
Lots of tree runs if the visibility was poor, and some great reds up high

Huge resort with plenty of variety for all levels. Biggest issue is ensuring that you can get back from Italy in adverse weather when main lift link is closed

Amazing experience. Food on the slopes a little pricier than other ski resorts. Plenty of different options for runs. Not ideal for beginner skiers as the number of blue slopes is low but great for more confident/experienced skiers. Amazing views of the Matterhorn and rounding area.

The most spectacular and iconic ski resort I have visited, picture perfect but comes at a price. Love the fact that you can ski over to Italy and have a fine lunch for half the cost on the Swiss side, and the piste down into Cervinia is epic. The skiing and infrastructure is noticeably better on the Swiss side. The Valley run down from the top back to Zermatt goes on forever and is also epic. I couldn't afford to go every year but will be returning at some point, it is a must do for any serious skiier and boarder.
