The Skiers' Guide to Pila

A great smaller resort, I have been taken school ski trips there for 6 years and go back each season for the first week of March. Quiet slopes and amazing tuition. I can’t wait to use the brand new gondola from bottom to top.

Went very late in the season and during school holidays so not everyone's preferred time of year. It was very cold at night, meaning all slopes were in good condition / icy first thing in the morning; but unseasonably warm, nay hot, weather during the day, saw the snow, lower down, melting before our eyes. The resort did v well at prolonging the snow, and at mid - to high level, the snow was pretty good all day. These higher slopes were v quiet earlier in the week, but as the kids improved and moved higher, they didn't resemble ones own private play area by the end of the week. Lots of punters came up from Aosta, using the amazing bubble link- there are plans to improve access to the higher slopes, v soon and a new restaurant, right at the top, is bring built to accommodate those that venture up there to take in the fabulous views. Pila itself is quiet small; a range of accommodation meets most preferences, but eating it and apres ski is limited. There are some long established venues, but at this time of year, they were closing quite early as many folk had headed back down the mountain. The new lifts will improve access to the mid and upper slopes, and I believe Pila had the potential to be a really good, medium sized resort for small groups and families who don't necessarily want to party late into the night. Pila is a great ski area for beginners and families. If you yourself are not a beginner but have younger people with you, then this is a great place where you can all have something to enjoy and not be far away if you need to meet up quickly at any point.
The newly added gondola to the top of the mountain has really opened up the ski area and gives the option for beginners to see the views from the top, which are stunning.
Looking forward to the restaurant opening at the top next year.

Fantastic quiet resort for a 3-4day trip
Accommodation extremely dated. Would recommend staying lower in the valley at Aosta

Fun easy to navigate resort with just enough going on to be lively, but not so much that it isnt about the skiing.Weekend days get super busy as the gondola straight up from Aosta masked it very easy access, otherwise pretty quiet on the slopes mid week.Good amount of slopes for all abilities,, havent been to any ski schools but there seems to be tonnes of options.

Pila is not the biggest ski area, so it's relaxed and there's no dashing around to get to the next valley & back. What makes Pila even more relaxing is the beautiful wide red & blue runs ~ virtually EMPTY red & blue runs, and black.Be sure to check out run No. 6 for a bit of fun with a ?natural half pipe. Also, whilst on run No 6, just to the side z(though you can't see it because of the terrain) is cafe Societe which is rsther nice & a bit posh !Plenty of other cafes but haven't tried them all.Minimal lift queues during the week, some queueing on Saturdays, which doesn't seem to impact the runs much at all. Eases off later in the afternoon, of voyrse.Pila is in a north facing bowl which seems to be fairly protected from the wind.If you stay in Pila I don't think you can be too far from the slope. Or you can stay down in the valley in Aosta which has a 18 minute gondola ride up which opens , I think, at 8am.

Lovely and quiet resort, but does mean that the lifts open quite late compared to some other places (round 9am).Weekends are busier due to the local Aostans coming to the slopes, but even so, whilst the lifts etc get super busy, the slopes don't so much - waits could be easily fixed with better lift management.Pistes were well kept and maintained throughout the week In terms of restaurants and bars, it's quite limited, but where we did go the food was great and service friendly.Hotel we stayed was not good in terms of food - one of the worst I've experienced! But the rooms were big and comfortable - just need to ignore some of the slightly dodgy maintenance!My favourite thing here was the quiet slopes and sleepier resort and friendly people. Oh and ski school instructor was the best!! They even did a prize giving at the end with badges with your level for adults and kinder eggs for the kids!

Pila is a hidden gem! 1 3/4 hours from Turin airport. NE facing resort so the snow it gets it holds on to well. The pistes are managed and prepared well. Piste routing make the most of the natural undulating terrain, lots of changes of gradient makes for fun skiing. Apres ski is not a strength, so may not suit all but perfect for those who want to focus on the skiing. Also some good value deals to be had.

Resort can be accessed easily from Aosta town which provides a large town base with great restaurants and bars. There is also lots of accommodation choice as well as the accommodation close to the piste. Great resort for learners as there is progression up the mountain. Lifts are quick but can be busy at weekends with large queues at the bottom lifts. Get to the top early and stay up high. This resort holds snow well into late season due to height and mostly North facing slopes. Some cracking red runs. Small resort but lots of fun.

Pila is great for first time skiers/snowboarders, particularly those with kids. Most of the accommodation is ski in/ski out and close to the ski school, no buses to the lifts here! Ski school instructors were fantastic and both my kids were up on the main slopes after their first ever ski lesson. Resort was pretty quiet and we hardly had to queue. The resort is very quiet after the lifts close so not much apres ski but the hotel we stayed in had a pool and evening entertainment. We went back to Pila the next year!

Went as a family group with grown up children. Daughter in laws first time. Ideal resort for learning to ski. Plenty of blue and easy reds. Not much for advanced skiers although we were lucky and theyd just had a dump of fresh powder which made things fun for a day or two. There was little apres ski and only a few restaurants. Our hotel was half board with a lovely bar and friendly staff. Not a resort to go to if you like mile munching, partying or shopping. It was fairly easy to use the gondola and then get a bus to explore other resorts like La Thuiel.

Pila is a fantastic resort despite not being one of the biggest. The slopes are always quiet even on busy peak weeks, the lifts queues might increase but the slopes are still quiet! How?! They have won awards for how well they look after the pistes, generally there are no chopped up moguls after lunch, also being north facing helps a lot. The runs are generally wide and the progression for beginners is perfect, youd grow in confidence.For the the intermediates, take on the Pila challenge skiing as many runs as you can in a day in chronological order and see how far you get. For the experts, when the snow has come, there is some good off piste. There are a few a few good black runs as well, rumours are RedBull were there in 2024 filming some bits. What works best in Pila is if you are in a group with mixed abilities, its very easy to meet up at lunch as it all skis back to a point, meaning everyone can ski the runs they want! They are investing in the lifts every year and have recently installed a new bubble right to the top point, so even beginners can get up and see the 360 degree view. Some of the lifts are a bit older and slower but allows you to take in all the beautiful views and tree lines. The food on the hill is excellent value and so are the drinks, coffee for 1 euro and a big beer about 6 euros. There is a park, a fun slope and snow tube area as well, so lots for everyone.The apres isnt like France or Austria, but instead come off the hill and have an appretivo, drinks with free snacks! They also run special events through the season such as torch light decent, ski testing in January and fireworks. You can stay up on the hill in Pila or down in the city of Aosta, which is only an hour from Turin airport! You can get there on a bus, train or cheap ish car hire (no icy mountain roads to navigate either). Aosta is fullOf history and culture, great for your non ski friends. They could even visit the Skyway at Mont Blanc for stunning views across the alps. If you love a ski day somewhere else as well, its very close to Courmmayour, La Thule and Cervina. My only worry for Pila is that it is growing with popularity! Perhaps my review shouldnt have been so positive! But I love it there and want everyone else to experience this amazing place.

Pila is great for beginner downhill skiers and has some fun uphill climbs if you have skins for your skis! You can hike up to the top of the pisted slopes so you dont need to be an advanced skier to try the uphill hikes. It can get busy on weekends and holidays here though.

Beautiful resort with amazing views and facilities. Lovely friendly staff. Amazing hot chocolate for those cold mornings before heading out on the slopes. Lots of great fun runs.

Small ish resort with something for everyone. High and north facing so holds the snow well. Family friendly.

Quiet but very friendly and authentic.great for a quick short break or beginners. A few good restaurants up in Pila itself more down in lower valley (didnt stay there). Great pizza place in Pila just near the slopes.

Small resort, very Italian but great for families and a quiet ski holiday. No queues and if want a day off head down the gondola into Aosta Valley

Small resort but great for a group of 40 school pupils. The ski school (evolution) was by far the best I have seen in my many ski trips. They kept the kids safe and injury free whilst ensuring that they progressed well. Well groomed slopes and no queues for lifts. No button lifts, thankfully.

This place is a hidden gem. Its located only an hour from Turin making it so simple to get to and a simple drive on the motorway.
You can stay either in resort which makes things more limited or in the town of Pila in the valley. Gorgeous valley town very typically Italian with gorgeous and wonderful restaurants and bars and loads of shops it really is a surprise. Hotels are good value and as always skiing in Italy is reasonable and value for money.
The slopes are a 15min ride up the mountain and the lifts are easy to get up and into the slopes which are well looked after and great fun to come down even better for a learner like me who could progress to the reds with ease.
Mega place, great value and just the right Italian charm!

Lovely resort. Very family friendly. Not great for ski in ski out . But staying in aosta village makes everything a lot lot cheaper
