Megève Overview
Megève is a picturesque alpine resort located in the Haute-Savoie region of France, offering skiers a beautiful backdrop of Mont Blanc views. Unlike its higher-altitude neighbours, Megève charms visitors with a more traditional French mountain experience, combining skiing with authentic alpine character.
The resort sits at a moderate altitude (1,050m-2,350m), spread across multiple interconnected ski areas including Rochebrune, Mont d'Arbois, and Le Jaillet. With just a 90-minute transfer from Geneva airport, it's particularly well-suited for weekend trips or short breaks.

The Skiing in Megève
Megève's ski area is extensive with 185 runs (35 beginner, 54 intermediate, and 72 advanced) served by a network of 84 lifts (13 gondolas/cable cars, 26 chairlifts, and 45 drag lifts). While the lift system gets solid marks for efficiency (4.19/5), some users note that certain lifts "could do with updating."
The terrain is particularly well-suited for beginners through to intermediates, with many wide, cruising pistes that are beautifully maintained. Our reviewers mention that the groomed runs (4.38/5) are consistently excellent, with one user noting they're "perfect for improving technique."
Advanced skiers haven't been forgotten - the resort offers decent off-piste options (3.60/5), particularly around Cote 2000, and some challenging tree runs (3.94/5). Tobias, an advanced skier, shared: "There's plenty on and off piste to be enjoyed, and great tree runs, with tree coverage across most of the mountain." The resort also features some steep mogul fields (2.96/5) for those seeking a challenge.
A notable advantage is the resort's quiet slopes (4.32/5), with Hannah, an advanced snowboarder, reporting: "Slopes were super quiet and we got on rides almost instantaneously." This makes Megève an excellent option for those who value space over crowds.
"Mainly reds/blue runs so not great if you’re looking for a more exciting ski. "
"Perfect place for beginners but apres ski places are away from the central so beginners cannot reach out those locations and they close the slopes a bit early."
Eating Out in Megève
Megève truly excels when it comes to eating out (4.41/5), with the resort's culinary scene being one of its major attractions. Mountain restaurants range from traditional Savoyard affairs to upscale dining experiences, though prices can be steep.
Antonia, an expert skier, advises: "Food here is amazing, but so are prices. Book for lunch and find the spots where the ski guides/ESF eat for best value." Several users mentioned the high quality of mountain restaurants, with Rowan noting "great choices for food on the slopes and in resort."
In town, the dining scene is equally impressive, with everything from casual bistros to Michelin-starred establishments. Carol, an advanced skier from the UK, notes that "Restaurants mainly pricey but excellent quality food even the non-Michelin star ones! There are cheaper options if you look for it."
For budget-conscious visitors, James suggests the tabac for "a couple of well priced drinks," while Emma recommends heading "out of the Main roads" where "there are some more affordable and great restaurants."

The Après-Ski in Megève
Megève's après-ski scene (3.77/5) is more sophisticated than rowdy, reflecting the resort's upscale character. While it may not match the party atmosphere of other French resorts, it offers quality over quantity.
La Folie Douce at 2000m is repeatedly mentioned as the resort's liveliest spot. James, an intermediate skier, calls it "an experience!" though another James notes it's "a fairly long way to ski back down to town, and wasn't very busy when we went."
In town, the après options tend toward the more refined end of the spectrum. Andrea, an expert skier, describes the village as "packed with nightlife," while Mark bluntly states that it's "simply too expensive" with "some odd door policies." James acknowledges that you'll find "a few ok bars in town but all very expensive - 15-16 euros for a large beer generally."
Lee, who has visited Megève for over 20 years, offers a more positive take: "The resort town/village is growing over most recent years. Lots of investment with plenty of places to eat and drink. Great apres ski bars all over."
"The view and après are spectacular, and the village is packed with nightlife."
Megève for Families
Megève excels as a family-friendly destination (4.58/5), with the resort consistently receiving high praise from parents. The combination of gentle slopes, excellent ski schools (4.54/5), and the charming village atmosphere makes it ideal for family holidays.
Philip, an advanced skier, notes that "The ski area works pretty well for groups and families as it's all well connected and has slopes suitable for all abilities." Ben, another advanced skier, agrees: "Very beautiful resort and very family friendly. Easy to access lifts from local Airbnbs and not too busy."
Beyond skiing, families can enjoy the sports centre with its ice rink, pool and spa, as mentioned by Kirsty, a beginner skier from the UK. The picturesque town centre with its horse-drawn carriages adds a fairy-tale quality that children particularly enjoy.
Tracy, an intermediate skier, summarises the appeal: "Great resort for families and non-families, great access to other resorts. Plenty of restaurants on the slopes. Good lifts and well manned to ensure swift access to each ski point start."
Accommodation Options in Megève
Megève offers excellent accommodation options (4.33/5), ranging from luxury hotels to more affordable apartments and chalets. The resort's traditional architecture and village layout mean most accommodation maintains an authentic alpine feel.
Several users mentioned staying in Airbnbs or apartments with good access to the lifts. Ben notes it was "easy to access lifts from local Airbnbs," suggesting convenient options beyond hotels. For those seeking more affordable options, Neil suggests: "St Gervais is as nice but much cheaper to stay and has great restaurants and night life."
The village layout means that many accommodations are within walking distance of the lifts, though not all offer ski-in/ski-out convenience. Lee advises: "If you pick the right places to stay, ski in and out is possible. But if not, the resort is well linked by a free bus service that operates well."
The range of options accommodates various budgets, though Megève generally positions itself in the premium segment of the market.
Environment and Sustainability in Megève
Megève has taken steps toward environmental responsibility, though it faces challenges as a lower-altitude resort in times of climate change. The resort has invested in more efficient snowmaking equipment to adapt to warmer winters, with several users noting the reliance on artificial snow for lower slopes later in the season.
The compact village layout and free bus service reduce the need for cars once in resort. Leonardo, an intermediate skier, observed the impact of warming temperatures: "End of season has lots of fake and slushy snow especially on piste closer to the village level." Tobias similarly commented that "the mountain has melted already at the time of posting this (18/03/2024)," highlighting the increasing climate challenges.
The resort's emphasis on preserving its traditional character and woodland areas contributes to its environmental appeal, maintaining the natural alpine landscape that makes it so distinctive.

Megeve is beautiful. The village, the pistes, the weather - we had a wonderful long weekend in March 2026! Lots of variety of slopes and superb mountain restaurants. We ate at La Fruitiere and Chalet Sauvage which were both excellent for food and entertainment. La Folie Douce delivered, as always, great fun! Accommodation ca be pricey but we stayed in the reasonably priced Hotel Chalet Sylvana near the Rochebrune lift. Excellent location and the friendliest hosts you could ask for. Megeve, we will be back.

The resort was fantastic!
In my opinion a minor amount of the pistes labelled blues and greens were very steep for their colour code.
The views on the mountain were gorgeous!
There are lots of areas for beginner/ intermediate skiers/snowboarders. And then a whole area made up mostly of reds and blacks for the more experienced thrill seekers.
Me and my family of all ages abilities and rider types all had an amazing time!

Great resort for first timers and also some who have been before. It is an expensive area but you pay for what you get so the quality of restaurants and bars are very good.

FAQs Skiers' Most Asked Questions
Megève FAQs: Skiers' Most Asked Questions
Is Megève snow-sure?
Megève isn't particularly snow-sure due to its relatively low altitude (1050m-2350m). Our users highlight that late season often brings slushy artificial snow, especially on lower slopes. As Tobias notes, "The mountain has melted already at the time of posting this (18/03/2024)." With climate change affecting snowfall in recent years, you'll want to check conditions before booking, particularly for early or late season trips. The north-facing slopes tend to hold snow better.
What mountain range is Megève part of?
Megève Ski Resort is part of the French Alps, specifically located in the Mont Blanc massif region. It sits in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with stunning views of Mont Blanc itself. Our users frequently mention the beautiful alpine setting and panoramic mountain views that make this resort so picturesque.
When does the ski season start and end in Megève?
The Megève ski season typically runs from mid-December until early April, though this can vary with weather conditions. Several Snomad users mention that being a lower altitude resort (1050m-2350m), late-season snow can become slushy on lower slopes. Tony, an advanced skier, recommends favouring peak times to ensure good snow coverage. For 2023/24, some users reported the mountain had already melted by mid-March, highlighting the resort's vulnerability to warming temperatures.
Is Megève good for beginners?
Megève is brilliant for beginners, earning 5.00/5 for beginners. The resort offers 35 gentle starter slopes with excellent ski schools rated 4.54/5 for quality. Our users consistently praise the wide, well-groomed runs perfect for building confidence. Kirsty, a beginner skier, describes Megève as "very beautiful" with excellent access from Geneva. The tree-lined slopes provide shelter and visibility, making it easier to learn even in variable weather.
Is Megève good for intermediate skiers?
Absolutely! Megève is fantastic for intermediate skiers, with its 54 dedicated intermediate runs offering plenty of variety. Users consistently praise the wide, well-groomed pistes that are perfect for improving technique. One Snomad community member called the Princesse runs "some of the best I've ever skied." The resort scores 4.02/5 for intermediates, with tree-lined slopes and minimal queues making it ideal for building confidence and skills.
Is Megève good for advanced skiers?
Megève offers solid terrain for advanced skiers, scoring 4.13/5 for advanced skiing. While not the highest resort, it compensates with excellent grooming and variety. The resort features challenging mogul fields, tree runs, and some steep sections, particularly at Cote 2000. When there's fresh snow, advanced skiers can find plenty to enjoy, though snow conditions can be variable due to the lower altitude.
Is Megève good for expert skiers?
Megève offers decent options for expert skiers with a rating of 4.06/5 for experts. While it's not the highest resort, experienced users praise its steep mogul runs and off-piste potential when conditions are good. One Snomad community member who's visited for 15+ years mentioned discovering new areas even after numerous visits. Is there snow at Christmas in Megève?
Christmas skiing in Megève can be hit-or-miss. While the resort has good snowmaking capabilities and scores well for groomed runs (4.38/5), its relatively low altitude (1050m-2350m) means natural snow coverage isn't guaranteed. For Christmas holidays, keep an eye on forecasts and expect better conditions on higher slopes.
Where should I stay in Megève and what type of accommodation is available?

Alternatively, you can take the bus from Geneva to Megève, though connections are less frequent.
