What Skiers Say About Obertauern

Obertauern attracts primarily intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders, with families also featuring prominently. Reviewers consistently praise the resort's snow reliability, well-groomed pistes, modern lift system, and the circular bowl layout that makes navigation straightforward. The ski-in/ski-out access and lack of lift queues are frequently mentioned positives. Après-ski receives mixed feedback—some enjoy the lively bars like Hochalm and Lürzerhütte, while others find the nightlife limited compared to larger Austrian resorts. Several reviewers note limited terrain for absolute beginners and experts, with most runs being blues and reds. Piste signage occasionally confuses visitors, and mountain restaurants can become crowded at peak times with limited table availability.

Obertauern is a beautiful overall resort - it has a wide variety of runs that are very well kept. Its one of my favourite resorts in Austria for its beauty and it has everything you could want - very nice hotels, plenty of high quality restaurants and very good après! Its good for all levels of skiers and boarders and for families too. Its one of the highest and coldest resorts in Austria so it has very good snow late into the season. Highly recommend!

A wonderful ski resort will well connected slopes, good snow reliability and almost all lifts are chairs so no taking off skis. very few crowds and queues, a bit less around in terms of non-ski activity as the town is tiny other than hotels/ski shops. great for a true first lifter, not great for non-skiers tagging along. excellent snow.

Visited towards the end of the 2023/2024 Ski season in March. It wasnt that busy and was quite warm. Large variety of runs for all skill levels. Easy to read and understand the route maps. Recommend for groups with mixed skill levels.

Brilliant resort, great variation of runs. Lifts were great and many new/improved lifts that have clearly been invested in recently. Several bars to visit for apres all with a great atmosphere. Would love to come back to this resort.

Access to the bottom chairlift was excellent. All of the left were easily accessible. As with all Austrian resorts the snow levels were good which made for some decent powder days. Our skiing ski out accommodation was excellent in its appearance quality and facilities which overall led to a excellent Weeks snowboarding.

Obviously Gamsleiten 2 is the absolute highlight of the resort!
The other runs tend to get busy but the lift service is great.
Eating on piste can get stressful from time to time and there often is no table service.

I've visited Obertauern with family for 10+ years, having learned to ski at Skischule Top and continuing to holiday there as an adult.

The slopes are excellent for all ages, there is a good variety of ski schools for different budgets.

There are few black runs across the resort, but the Gamsleiten II run is one of the steepest in the Alps- great for a challenge. The black runs are sometimes not groomed at the same frequency as the reds/blues, usually owing to weather, however they are still maintained well and are very quiet to ski on. Most of the ski area is slopes, there is limited off-piste/forest skiing area.

Accommodation prices vary but are reasonably priced for the Alps and the resort altitude, with lots of options which are straight to piste. The apres scene is a little quiet, there aren't many large bars or clubs and only one or two main venues which stay open late.

Overall, great resort with lots of good memories!

I have been to obertauern many times and we always return for its fantastic food and bowl shaped resort, so no matter where you end up you can always ski down into the town in the centre

Lovely place for families or for a week skiing. Our hotel was across the road from the pieste which was useful. It was also a lovely hotel. Only downside was the runs could be very busy werent always groomed and got mogelly. By the end of the day most of the green runs had mogels on them or where slushy. The lifts where ok never had to wait particularly long.

I really enjoyed it here and had a great time on the runs here and I also loved the skiing tour we did there ariund the area. I went here last february for the first time and even though the general temperatures weren't great in Austria (the other place where we stayed was quite warm due to which the snowquality was quite bad), the snow there was very good at the time we went there.

An awesome resort, with a great mix of runs and off-piste. Reasonable elevation for Austria so snow quality is pretty good compared to other resorts.

Obertauern is a great family-friendly resort, with quite-ish slopes and a good lift system. Plenty of good mountain restaurants, but the town is a bit quite with not much in the way of apres-ski.
Have skied there a few times, and wll go again sometime in the future.

We went to Obertauern first because we were advised by a friend - TV producer for their equivalent of Ski Sunday - that he thought this would be the best resort for our 3 famies of mixed skiers with young children - high, great snow, wide range of pistes and off piste, plus great childcare for pre-skiers. 25 years later and we still go there, driven by those kids who learnt to ski there and later did gap year ski instructing (full anwerter schilehrer qualified when we were all EU) with their ski school. Great accommodation choices, restaurants, night life and cafes/bars, both on piste and off piste.

I went for 5 days during the start of February 2024. The location of the village of obertauern is amazing. Its very close to the slopes. The actual shops are great and located near to each other.
The slopes are amazing. The runs accommodate for all types of skiers I went with my family and each were able to go down runs best suited to them. The long blues were nice to warm up on and then the reds are nice. I wouldnt say the runs that are close to the village are that challenging but if you plan out your routes you come across amazing blacks and will have a great time

Obertauern is a lively, fun resort with a huge variety of runs. As a more advanced skier, we managed to circle around the whole bowl of runs in a day, including some gnarly off piste in deep powder. The Gamsleitan 2 black was a beast and I love that you can buy a badge afterwards to prove you did it! Very nice restaurants with friendly staff, and some excellent apres from 4-late.
