Kicking Horse Review Summary

Kicking Horse draws predominantly advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders seeking steep, technical terrain including chutes, bowls, and glades. Reviewers consistently mention deep powder, low crowds, and significant vertical drop (over 4,000 feet). The resort has limited lift infrastructure, primarily one gondola, which funnels most traffic and can create bottlenecks. Beginners and intermediates find limited suitable terrain, with only a few green runs available. The base area and town of Golden offer basic amenities rather than extensive après-ski or dining options. Several reviewers note the need for hiking to access the best terrain, and groomers are not always well-maintained.

Kicking Horse is the place to be if you are looking for steep, sustained chutes and quiet easily accessed in-bounds terrain to hike to. For advanced/expert skiers, K-Horse is excellent. There are numerous chutes and bowls to explore with nicely spaced glades lower down. Beginner/intermediate skiers are likely to get bored doing cat-tracks all day. The lift system is mostly ok, but could use some improvements. Much of the mountain funnels you back to the base, which can feel like a waste of time when most of the good terrain (and better snow) is on the upper mountain. It is also very tiring on the legs given the ~1200 m vertical drop of this mountain. There are some nice vacation homes available for rent at the resort base, and there is some decent nightlife in Golden. Getting to/from the resort and town without driving can be a challenge, though.

Unreal experience skiing kicking horse. A true Canadian experience with incredible terrain just off the gondola. Nowhere near the crowds of Whistler but with terrain that standout compares. Great expert terrain but prob not best for first ski trip.

Kicking Horse is one of the best place in Canada next to Whistler and Revelstoke for backcountry skiing. It is less crowded then the other 2. I lived in Lake Louise for a few years and every time I had the chance I was driving to Kicking Horse and never been disappointed.

Great local mountain and resort - super challenging terrain, was a shame we went too early in the season before the snowpack had accumulated fully!

Extremely challenging terrain that is more like backcountry avalanche terrain that just happens to be avalanche controlled. Some great bootpack terrain and slackcountry. There could be more lifts to the various peaks to make it easier to access but the resort isnt crowded so the wait isnt bad. The resort is very quiet and is very much a skier/snowboarders resort with barebones amenities. Definitely recommend visiting kicking horse and other resorts nearby for some of the best pow in the world.

Kicking horse is fantastic for a group of experienced skiers. Terrain is top tier with countless couloirs that open into expansive bowls. The mountain is begging you to let her rip. We never had to wait in line for more than a minute or two for anything. Town of golden is great as well.

Perfect quiet Mountain that is a hidden gem. Terrain is challenging if you dare to hike it and you are rewarded with amazing views and beautiful untouched powder. Very quiet resort, almost never had to wait in line for the lifts.

Kicking horse is a crown jewel for anyone that is advanced or professional. Tons of powder, technical runs and incredible terrain that definitely makes it worth while. Maybe not the most amazing mountain for someone that is a beginner or intermediate given the rugged and steep terrain but definitely worth hitting if you feel comfortable enough. Lots to love about kicking horse despite the mediocre lift system and the somewhat sketchy ride to the mountain itself, regardless of that Id rank it easily in the top 3 mountains to ski in Canada!

Favourite resort to ski at. Very tough terrain and some spots on the mountain are hard to get to which leaves lots of untouched terrain.

Great resort to ski as a different spot to SKi Big 3. More aligned to European resorts than Canadian

Kicking Horse is my favorite ski hill in Canada. There is so much advanced terrain to explore. You can almost always find powder if you don't mind hiking the ridges of the resort.

Hands down, the best resort I have ever been to. Amazing pisted routes that let you gain a grasp of the mountain as a beginner and help you build up confidence to work up to the bigger slopes. One main gondola from the base (max I ever waited was 20 minutes and this was a holiday weekend after lunch) which will take you right to the top and from here you can follow a green highway which gives you access to every type of skiing possible. Nice greens and blues with amazing views, challenging blacks through trees and valleys, technical blacks through steep mogul fields, laid back and wide open pisted tracks to take in the stunning views. If you are looking for a proper challenge and access to the next step the Stairway to Heaven lift will give you access to 2 other peaks and a brand new bowl, please be aware this lift should not be taken by unsure skiers as the only way down is via a black run. Once you are comfortable with this side of the resort get your hiking boots on and head to Terminator and T2. I wont spoil any of the magic with you but bring snacks, water, and a good group of pals :)

Anybody that's truly explored and expierenced Kickinghorse would agree that it's the black sheep of all Canadian resorts, in a good way. It's a total badass and offers terrain incomparable to anything else in BC. Lift lines are manageable and snow is always wicked.

Really great ski resort! Not too far from Golden if you decide to stay out there. This is a relatively steep mountain face with a few friendly runs for beginners. Most groomed runs are quite rocky and have lots of traffic so be aware of that. Given the difficulty of how steep some runs are, it allows beginners to really push themselves! But theres so many runs to try out. Tree runs are really unique and cool, lots to explore!

Great skiing but not many options for non-advanced skiers. Lift infrastructure could be better as many of the best areas require hiking to, but that leads to them having amazing snow
