Beginner Skiing With a View: Learning in Les 2 Alpes

For many first-time skiers, choosing a resort can feel like a trade-off. Beginner-friendly skiing often means spending your first few days on nursery slopes, while the wider mountain can feel out of reach. Les 2 Alpes offers a different experience. Alongside its 16 green runs and 45 blue runs, the resort gives beginners the chance to get higher up the mountain early in their trip. Its learning areas aren’t confined to the bottom of the resort, with gondolas providing access to higher slopes where beginners can progress while taking in the mountain scenery. At the resort base, 3 free beginner lifts, Champamé, Coolidge and Vikings, give first-timers easy access to the nursery slopes at around 1,650m. From there, beginners can gradually work their way higher as their confidence develops. For our Snomad community, this is reflected in a beginner skiing rating of 4.22/5, based on 571 reviews from real skiers and snowboarders. In Les 2 Alpes, new skiers can learn at their own pace without compromising the wider mountain experience.

Learning to Ski Across Les 2 Alpes

Les 2 Alpes offers beginners something not every resort can: the chance to learn higher up the mountain, with its nursery slopes that aren't limited to the village. Jacob (intermediate skier) comments “having nursery slopes in the village, and at 2,600m and 3,200m makes it feel like they can be part of the action and not confined to the village zone”. Being able to access higher terrain also means that beginners can benefit from the resort's high altitude, snow-sure conditions. Also, the slopes themselves are well maintained, earning a 4.35/5 groomed runs rating. For someone learning to ski, consistent snow and well-groomed pistes provide a more predictable surface to learn on, making it easier to focus on building confidence and developing technique.

The lift system is another key part of the beginner experience to consider, with Les 2 Alpes scoring a 4.42/5 lift efficiency rating. The resort has 9 gondolas/cable cars, 13 chairlifts and 20 surface lifts, giving learners a range of ways to access the mountain. For newbies, using a lift can be one of the most daunting parts of the day, so having a lift network that is easy to navigate can make getting around feel more manageable. Jamie (beginner snowboarder) describes Les 2 Alpes as “so good to learn, with lots of lifts and very easy to get around”. An accessible lift system can help beginners feel more confident and comfortable exploring the mountain.

From the Glacier to the Village: Exploring the Mountain as a Beginner

With lessons, beginners can build confidence to begin to explore beyond the nursery slopes. Les 2 Alpes has 16 green runs and 45 blue runs, including several on the Vallée Blanche side, where Agnieszka (beginner skier) found a “perfect green piste”. Maria (beginner skier) also describes how “after lessons we managed to ski from the glacier to Crêtes, then the cable car to the resort”. New skiers and snowboarders can cover a substantial amount of the resort without needing to move straight onto more challenging terrain.

Learning in Les 2 Alpes can become less about practising in one area and more about experiencing the entire mountain. Longer routes combine gentle skiing with mountain views and places to stop along the way. The Jandri blue run is a distinctive option for beginners who have developed some confidence on blue terrain. Starting at around 3,200m, it allows skiers to descend towards the resort at 1,650m while taking in some of Les 2 Alpes’ best mountain scenery. One option is to take the lift up to Jandri 3,200m and stop at Panorama de l’Oisans for its 360-degree views of the surrounding peaks, glaciers and valleys, before continuing via the Balade du Jandri at 2,800m and into the Toura sector at 2,600m. From there, why not stop for lunch at Chalet de Toura before continuing towards Belle Étoile at 2,100m and Demoiselles at 1,650m, eventually skiing back towards the village. With plenty of opportunities to stop for breaks and take in the views, the route offers a relaxed way to spend an afternoon exploring the wider mountain without immediately tackling more challenging terrain.

Ski Schools in Les 2 Alpes

Ski schools are another key part of beginner skiing, and Les 2 Alpes scores an impressive 4.32/5 ski school quality rating. Philip (expert skier) highlights the “excellent ESF ski school staff, who clearly love to be at this particular resort”. Les 2 Alpes also has ESI (European Ski School), offering ski lessons for beginners and other ability levels. For new skiers, enthusiastic and supportive instructors make a massive difference in building learners' confidence. Sophie (beginner skier) also describes her family’s experience positively, saying the “ski school was excellent”.

Mixed-Ability Group Skiing

For families and groups with different abilities, being able to ski close by without compromising on challenge level is important. While beginners have plenty to explore in Les 2 Alpes, its ratings of 4.12/5 for intermediate skiing and 4.16/5 for advanced skiing show that more experienced members of the group have plenty of options too. On some routes, skiers and snowboarders can choose terrain to suit their ability, such as taking a blue or red run, before meeting at the next lift or another point on the mountain. This means groups can spend time skiing at their own pace while still having regular opportunities to regroup. Sally (advanced skier) describes the resort as having “Enough to keep a large mixed-ability group happy. Good for being able to meet up”. Caroline (intermediate skier) similarly found that “We had a week including beginner snowboarders and experienced skiers and plenty for everyone”, with the group also enjoying the Jandri Express up to the glacier together.

Les 2 Alpes makes it possible to enjoy the wider mountain while learning at your own pace, whether it’s your first time on the slopes or you’re travelling with a group of mixed-ability.
