It has modern lifts and rarely gets crowded. The runs are mostly cruisy blues and reds with a few more challenging blacks and a modest amount of off-piste."
For more advanced skiers, Gregoire mentions that "it is joined up with Les Diablerets via a crazy chair lift that goes both ways... You can also access Glacier 3000. A lovely resort that’s got enough for every piste skier or boarder. Wonderful and quiet, calm and family friendly and family run.

Went as first time skiers, ESS group lessons were excellent and we felt well supported at all times. The slopes were well maintained and only started getting chipped up well into the afternoon. There were some good runs as beginners although the inter-area lifts all took red runs to access which was annoying. Not a massive apres culture but all the available bars were good and the blue run from Bretaye down to Villars is one of the best and nicest ways to finish a run day that I've ever been lucky enough to find.

Great resort, loads of very accessible off piste and cruise runs - the reds are more like blues and the blacks are more like reds

1st time to this resort and we were not disappointed. Lovely hotel - Victoria, ease of ski hire and lovely town with good places to eat.
The resort was big enough for adventure, but great for families with different skiing abilities.
A central place from several runs, was the restaurant and train station which was helpful in allowing the family members to split off and do different runs, and then regroup easily.
Restaurant area and ski school was busy, but it was 1/2 term so expected.
That said we had no issue getting a table with only a short wait.
Similarly the queues for the lifts/ gondolas were minimal, and moved fast.
Weather prevented us visiting the glacier 3000 with heavy snow fall and poor visibility, but we were grateful for the fresh snow during the week, for our skiing.
Swiss prices are on the expensive side, so ensure your budget accounts for this!

For families the ski school meet at Bretaye which is accessible by mountain railway. For adventurous skiers you can take the telecabine from Roc D Orsy and meet the rest of family after a short red to Bretaye. The lift system is top notch with a link to Les Diablerets once you find your feet. Recommend lunch at Hotel du Lac and enjoy the treeline run bk to the village if enough snow.

FAQs Skiers' Most Asked Questions
Villars - Gryon FAQs: Skiers' Most Asked Questions
Is Villars - Gryon snow-sure?
Villars - Gryon isn't particularly snow-sure. With a top elevation of 2020m, it sits lower than many Swiss resorts. Several Snomad users note the south-facing aspect can affect snow quality, especially in sunny periods. As Archie mentions, "there was a lot more snow" previously, but "now there is less and sometimes the amount of runs can be limited." March visits still offer decent skiing according to some reviewers, but consider the Glacier 3000 connection for more reliable conditions.
What mountain range is Villars - Gryon part of?
Villars-Gryon is located in the western Swiss Alps, specifically in the Vaud Alps (also known as the Bernese Alps). The resort overlooks the Rhône Valley and sits on a sunny plateau facing the Dents du Midi mountain range. One Snomad community member mentioned the "spectacular peaks visible from just about every type of accommodation," highlighting the stunning Alpine backdrop that frames this family-friendly resort.
When does the ski season start and end in Villars - Gryon?
Villars-Gryon's ski season typically runs from mid-December to mid-April, weather conditions permitting. Our users note that March still offers plenty of snow for decent skiing, though as Archie mentions, "there is less snow now than in previous years." The south-facing slopes can sometimes suffer in the sunshine, affecting lower elevations. For the most reliable conditions, James recommends heading up to Glacier 3000, which tends to have a longer season thanks to its higher altitude.
Is Villars - Gryon good for beginners?
Villars-Gryon is excellent for beginners, scoring 4.00/5 for beginners and 4.67/5 for family friendliness. Our users praise its "great ski school and beautiful views" with "a lot of options for new skiers." The 16 beginner runs offer gentle progression, and one Snomad community member describes it as a "fantastic ski resort for beginners" with "good ski schools" and a "friendly atmosphere." Perfect for those just starting their skiing journey.
Is Villars - Gryon good for intermediate skiers?
Villars-Gryon is excellent for intermediates, scoring 4.19/5 for intermediate skiers. Users consistently praise the well-groomed blues and reds that dominate the area. Nicholas, an intermediate skier, notes it "provides a reasonably sized ski area - certainly good for intermediate skiers for a week or so." Julia adds that "intermediate runs are particularly well groomed and varied." With modern lifts and minimal crowds, you can enjoy cruisy runs all day without repeating a piste.
Is Villars - Gryon good for advanced skiers?
While Villars-Gryon scores 4.67/5 for advanced skiers, it has limited terrain for those seeking serious challenges. Snomad users note the Glacier 3000 offers more demanding runs, but one expert skier mentioned "there is little to no off-piste skiing due to the topography." Another said it's "perfect for families and beginner to intermediate skiers" rather than advanced riders. The resort has some black competition runs and tree skiing, but serious advanced skiers might want more variety.
Is Villars - Gryon good for expert skiers?
Villars-Gryon offers limited options for experts, scoring 4.21/5 for expert skiers. As James from our community notes, "You can access Glacier 3000 if you need something more challenging." Another Snomad user, Chris, mentions "high quality ski mountaineering and touring" for those seeking more remote experiences. However, Matt points out that "more adventurous skiers would have a better time in a larger resort with more varied ski options." Experts should look beyond the modest 2 advanced runs for thrills.
Is Villars - Gryon good for non-skiers?
Villars-Gryon offers plenty for non-skiers. Our users highlight the village's excellent facilities including a swimming pool, wellness spa, ice rink (where you can watch local ice hockey matches), and a bowling alley with a sports bar. Grégoire mentions it has "a lovely vibe" with various entertainment options, while James notes the "pretty tree-lined" surroundings. The resort scores exceptionally well for family friendliness (4.67/5), making it ideal for groups with mixed interests.
Is there snow at Christmas in Villars - Gryon?
Villars-Gryon typically has snow at Christmas, though it can be variable. The resort's elevation (1114m-2020m) helps maintain conditions, with Snomad users mentioning that even in March there's "still plenty of snow for decent skiing." However, some users note that conditions can be "hit and miss" and that there's "less snow than there used to be." The south-facing slopes can suffer in strong sunshine, so Christmas tends to be more reliable than later season visits.
Where should I stay in Villars - Gryon and what type of accommodation is available?
Villars-Gryon offers varied accommodation options throughout its charming village. Our users highlight the range from luxury hotels like Hotel Royalp to apartments and budget-friendly hostels. The centre of Villars provides convenient access to shops, restaurants, and the free shuttle bus to the lifts.
