What Skiers Say About Zell am See - Schmittenhöhe

Zell am See attracts a wide range of skiers, from beginners to advanced, with families particularly well represented. Users consistently mention the picturesque lakeside setting, well-maintained pistes, and efficient lift infrastructure. The resort is frequently described as suitable for intermediates, though some advanced skiers note limited terrain without visiting connected areas like Saalbach and Kaprun (accessible via ski bus). Reviews highlight friendly atmosphere, good ski schools, and reasonable variety of on-mountain restaurants. Negative patterns include busy slopes during peak periods, narrow bottlenecks on certain runs back to town, long queues at the main gondola during holidays, and concerns about snow quality at lower altitudes later in the season.

We skiied here for the first time - four adults and two teens. Four of the group are great skiers and tackles all the runs within the week - they reported that the resort could be a bit better connected in terms of reaching other ski areas without needing buses, but that is just the nature of the resort.

One of us is a beginner/ intermediate and took a ski lesson which was excellent.

The final member of the group was a non skier - there was plenty to do for non skiers including trip to Salzburg, Christmas markets, hiking, eating, foot trip up the mountains, boat trips etc

Would recommend the resort for a mixed group of skiers - hotel was lovely and the food very good.

For more experienced skiers, it might be a bit limited in terms of quantity and range of runs. For the beginner there were some good blue runs but those at the bottom of the mountain weren't open so unable to ski from top to bottom.

Lifts excellent albeit a bit pricey.

I'll be honest with this one, I might be extremely biased for Zell.

This was where I learnt to ski, and I don't think anywhere I've been has compared since.

For a learner, it's ideal. The slopes in the ski school have just enough gradient to ease you into finding your ski legs, and when you get higher up into the mountain, the blue runs are just steep enough to prepare you for more advanced runs later down the line. On the topic of ski school, the teachers are incredibly patient never pushing you so far out of your zone to scare you.

When you've fully found your snow legs, the reds and blacks offer a great range of challenges. This is where I did my first black run. It essentially goes from the very top of the slopes all the way back down to the town with a cracking set of modules at the bottom that build up throughout the day

There really is something for everyone at Zell, including the hiking around the area (would thoroughly recommend walking across the frozen lake. Mega sketchy, but a lot of fun)

The food, the aprés, the people, Zell has it all. There's a cracking bar/hotel at the top of the slopes that serve Schnapps with fruit soaked inside it. They always have a mental guy wearing a horned ski helmet doing some kind of karaoke. Great entertainment. Would recommend.

Some cracking spots down in the town with outdoor heating to get a glühwein and warm up afterwards as well.

Got lucky with the snow but went over Christmas and the conditions were great. Fast lifts, no waiting around even though there were lots of people. Big wide runs, plenty to do for the different ski levels in our group. Great places to eat on the slopes and same cost as in the town. Lots of buses to take you to different ski areas nearby which was included in the ski pass. Bit pricey for ski hire but will definitely go back.

This resort is great if an intermediate, as plenty of good runs. Not necessarily so great for beginners in my opinion. Everything about the resort is well run and maintained. The lifts are carefully managed for safety. And have always had a great experience here.

Awesome resort, something for everyone. Having the lift pass that can access also Kitzsteinhorn and Saalbach-Hinterglemm makes a massive area so easily enough for a a week or two. Zell is a gorgeous little village and loads of cool après ski stuff to do such as Christmas market in December, ice hockey matches, alpine coaster and the Tauren Spa. Best resort in Europe in my opinion.

I only started snowboarding last year at the good old age of 58. Fantastic experience in Zell. Awesome accomodation, learner slopes. Definately get a lesson or 2 . If your starting as a begginer. First day I didn't get a lesson , and after hitting the deck on multiple occassions, I got 2 lessons ,and then I fully enjoyed my experience. Apres ski was awesome ,and the community were so welcoming. The views breathtaking and memories stay in your mind forever.

Went to Zell am See and it was a great trip. You can ski to Saalbach which is also really cool and Kaprun isn't far on the ski bus either. The runs in Zell am See were all really good, there are a couple of uphills on the linking runs so on a snow board watch out!

The resort is a great option for young groups and families with a wide range of pistes and ample amounts of apres options for the livelier folk, the town is impressive and deep with history and beauty, the night life is also good, I really enjoyed my time there and will be returning soon.

Not the best skiing I have experienced but as a total package you simply can't beat it.

With the pass including Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglem you do get a decent amount of KMs to explore and these include some great runs and fantastic views. Never had any major lift issues except in Kaprun and there seems to be an upgrade of something every year.

The choice of on-piste restaurants and bars is outstanding whether consuming inside or out. Amazing food and really friendly, welcoming staff. Great party atmosphere available for those that want it.

Zell-am-See town is beautiful and also has great restaurants and aprés-ski with a relaxed atmosphere but you can party hard if you want to.

Never had any bad accommodation whether it's an apartment, hotel or chalet.

Always hired great equipment and had really useful advice.

25+ years of visiting here says it all. As a family, we love it. So much so my daughter did a season in Zell.

The ski resort was great plenty of slopes of all difficulty and great for beginners and intermediates. Plenty of options for ski school with multiple ski schools around the mountain. Was busy but never a long wait for any lifts with a very modern system with heated seats. Plenty of bars and restaurants on the mountain. In the town there are loads of bars and good restaurants with a very good atmosphere. Ski buss are very good and come included with the ski pass and helps with getting around the valley.
