Skim City: London's First Ski Skimming Event Comes To Tower Bridge (With Real Snow)

London’s going full après this weekend. On Saturday 11 October (12–6pm), merino wool activewear brand, icebreaker, is hosting Skim City at Potters Fields Park (SE1 2UD) - a snowy pond skim right in the shadow of Tower Bridge. It’s free to watch, family-friendly, loaded with real snow, and yes… you can have a go. Coaches from Maison Sport will be there to guide first-timers, while UK riders throw down across the pool.

Quick Facts

  • What: icebreaker’s Skim City (urban pond skim)
  • When: Sat 11 Oct, 12–6pm
  • Where: Potters Fields Park, SE1 2UD (beneath Tower Bridge)
  • Cost: Free to watch; public tutorials bookable on the day
  • Coaching: Maison Sport pros on site
  • The skim: an approx. eight-metre pool on tons of real snow

Why we're hyped

A pond skim under Tower Bridge in October is the perfect way for UK skiers and boarders to fire up the legs and the stoke before the lifts officially start spinning. Real snow. Big-crowd energy. Sound-up, phones-out moments. Riders sending it across the pond while coaches help newbies find their feet. It’s the ultimate pre-season teaser right in the city.

Pond skim 101 (for the uninitiated)

Never seen one? Picture a snowy in-run leading to a pool. You carry just enough speed to glide across the water on your bases. Too slow and you’re swimming; too fast and you’ll create a Thames-side tidal wave (crowd will love you). Public tutorials will be released on the day, so you can learn the stance, speed and balance from qualified coaches before you try your luck.

Pro tip: Commit. Eyes up, athletic stance, bases flat. Wobbly at the lip = soggy socks.

How to get involved (or just soak up the vibes)

  • Roll up early: It runs 12–6pm; arrive ahead of time to grab a prime spot and clock the speed sweet-spot.
  • Thinking of riding? Listen for on-site announcements — tutorials and public slots are released on the day.
  • Dress for splash-zone viewing: October breezes + spray = bring a spare layer.
  • Bring the crew: It’s free and family-friendly — easy Saturday city stoke.

Who's behind it?

Icebreaker, the NZ-born merino brand, is marking 30 years with something that’s more “join in” than “look at a billboard.” Expect their trademark merino everywhere (great for October temps and faster dry-outs if you go for a swim). The event is being amplified by UK snow media and the London scene, with listings popping up across industry outlets and event platforms.

What we'll be watching for

  • Technique clinics: Maison Sport coaches helping first-timers nail speed and posture before a run.
  • Community riders: A stack of UK skiers and boarders showcasing their skills and probably some fancy-dress shenanigans.
  • The “will-they-won’t-they” exits: Nothing beats the roar when someone just sneaks out dry on the far bank.
  • Iconic backdrop: Tower Bridge, skyline views, and a snow lane on the Thames — ridiculously photogenic.

Snomad tips if you’re skimming

  • Speed is your friend: Commit from the in-run; last-second braking = bath.
  • Hands forward, eyes up: Strong, stacked stance keeps you centred over the skis/board.
  • Keep the bases flat: Avoid a hard edge; that’s how you hook and sink.
  • Tight boots, tidy setup: Loose boots makes balance harder.
  • Celebrate after the exit: Ride it out straight before fist-pumps.

Make a day of it

Potters Fields Park is a cracking spot for events - riverside lawns, easy access from London Bridge and Tower Hill, and plenty of coffee within a short stroll. Combine a late breakfast with a few hours of splash-zone spectating, then spin up winter plans with your mates using Snomad’s resort comparison tools.
