Niseko, located on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, is one of the country’s most famous ski resorts, known for its exceptionally light, dry powder snow (13-15m average snowfall) and long, reliable winter season. The area actually consists of several connected resorts: Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri offer extensive terrain suitable for all levels. It has a vibrant international atmosphere, great off-piste and backcountry options, natural hot springs (onsen), and a lively dining and nightlife scene.

Honestly it was my first time ever skiing in Japan and fell in love with this resort. I’m a big backcountry rider and the amount of amazing terrain out of the gates at the resort was my absolute favorite. Also the resort itself is just so unique in each town/area! You definitely should explore all of the different villages to get the full experience of the mountain no matter which one you stay in!

Niseko is a fantastic destination overall, with incredibly friendly locals and plenty of English spoken, making it easy to settle in. The powder is as good as advertised, arriving almost daily and delivering some of the best snow conditions you’ll find anywhere. However, the terrain park is a major letdown, and the lift access to lap it is frustratingly inefficient with consistently long queues. That said, the food is absolutely to die for if you explore just outside Hirafu, and the drinks are refreshingly cheap—perfect for seasonaires.

Skiing here in Dec-Feb is unreal. While you may catch large groups of people once youre on the mountain you feel such heaven and peace in all the powder. Beautiful area with lots of local food to try. Expensive and hard to get to but worth the visit
