Why Sölden Deserves a Place on Your Ski Bucket List
Sölden is a resort where you can spend the day skiing long, well-groomed pistes, catch a World Cup race or mountain festival, and still have plenty more to do. With a ski season that runs from October to May, 147km of pistes and loads of unique experiences, there’s a lot to fit into a week here. Dan, an advanced skier, says it was “easily one of the best ski experiences I’ve had in the Alps. If you’re debating between resorts, just book this one.”

A Long Ski Season
One of Sölden’s biggest advantages is the length of its ski season. Thanks to its high-altitude slopes and two glaciers, the resort opens in October and stays open until May. It’s one of the first resorts to open in Europe, and the first in Tyrol, making it an option for those keen to get back on the slopes before winter is fully underway.
The altitude is just as useful towards the end of the season, when lower resorts can start to struggle with warmer temperatures. Dave, an intermediate skier, visited in April and found that “the snow high up was still great into the afternoon even in April.”
Whether you’re planning an early-season trip, hoping to squeeze in one last ski holiday in spring, or simply looking for guaranteed great snow, Sölden is a solid choice.
Skiing for All Abilities

With 147km of pistes across three main areas, Gaislachkogl, Giggijoch and the Glaciers, there's plenty to explore. The areas are linked by lifts and runs, so you can spend the week discovering different parts of the mountain rather than skiing the same few pistes every day.
It's also a good option if you're travelling with people of different abilities, with ratings of 4.17/5 for beginners, 4.52/5 for intermediate skiers, 4.51/5 for advanced skiers and 4.52/5 for experts. As Hannah, an intermediate skier, puts it, “It is such an amazing place for all levels of skier and snowboarders.”
The pistes get particularly good feedback from Snomad users, earning an impressive rating of 4.67/5 for groomed runs. Frank says they “make it great for cruising and building up confidence, but there’s still enough challenge to keep things interesting.” Sarah also highlights how “well kept and nice and wide” the pistes are, making them “good for both beginners and experts.” With beautifully groomed and wide-open pistes, Sölden is a dream for skiers who love smooth, effortless cruising with stunning runs to explore.
There's plenty of blues for a relaxed day on the mountain, and tougher pistes for those who want to push themselves. Rick, an intermediate skier, sums up the variety nicely, saying that “Sölden has enough for everyone, some fantastic cruising blues, challenging reds and of course the World Cup Rettenbach piste.”
Sölden’s Big Events Season

Sölden kicks off the AUDI FIS Ski World Cup season each year, with the opening races held on the Rettenbach glacier. This year's event took place on 24–25 October, attracting more than 30,000 fans to watch 140 athletes compete. Even if you missed race weekend, you can still ski the Rettenbach piste yourself. Steve, an advanced skier, calls it “a must for speedsters.”
The other big date in the calendar is the Electric Mountain Festival, which returns from 12–17 April next year, bringing electronic music to the mountains towards the end of the season.
With more than 15 international acts across 11 locations, the festival mixes days on the slopes with open-air DJ sets at around 2,000m. It’s a good excuse to book a spring ski trip, especially if you've got a group of friends who prefer music and drinks in the mountains over a quiet evening in. Yukee, an intermediate skier who visited during the festival, said: “We went there when the Electric Mountain Festival was on, and it was amazing.”
These are the sorts of experiences that make a trip to Sölden stand out. You could be watching world-class ski racing one day, skiing the same famous piste yourself the next, or planning your holiday around a festival with your friends.
Unique Experiences in Sölden

If your dates don’t line up with either of these annual events, there are still plenty of experiences that make a trip to Sölden feel different from a typical ski holiday.
Eating out is another one of Sölden’s strong points. With a Snomad rating of 4.28/5, Frank, advanced skier says "there are plenty of restaurants to satisfy most appetites." For something a bit more special, there is the ice Q restaurant which is Austria's highest-altitude toque-rated gourmet restaurant, perched at 3,200m. While the panoramic views are hard to beat, the food makes it worth the trip in its own right. As Claudio, an advanced skier, puts it: “Very good food, and on top of that the ice Q and the 007 Elements are really worth the price!”
Right next to ice Q, you’ll find 007 ELEMENTS, a cinematic installation dedicated to the James Bond film Spectre, which was filmed in part in Sölden. It’s a great option for a day when you fancy a break from skiing, or if the weather isn’t cooperating. And even if you’re not a James Bond fan, it’s a chance to experience something you won’t find at any other resort. Danny, an advanced skier, recommends the experience too: “Has the elements bar where 007 was filmed and on a sunny day the views are breathtaking.”
If the unique experience you’re after is still all about skiing, Sölden has options beyond a usual day on the slopes. Wednesday Night Fever runs every Wednesday evening from 23 December 2026 to 17 March 2027, giving you the chance to ski after dark. So if you’ve already covered plenty of the regular pistes, you can try skiing after dark. A different way to experience Sölden’s mountains.
If you’re putting together your ski bucket list, Sölden is well worth a spot on it. With a long ski season, great pistes for all abilities and plenty going on, on and off the slopes, it’s got all the ingredients for a brilliant week in the mountains. Whether you’re skiing the World Cup piste, catching a festival with your friends or getting first tracks before everyone else, there are plenty of ways to make the trip one to remember. Check out all everything you need to know before you book your holiday on Sölden’s Profile.
