For a family-friendly, affordable, mid-west ski resort Whitecap is pretty good. The runs are relatively longer than most mid-west resorts and well-maintained. The staff is helpful. A fairly decent variety of runs. One of the best aspects is the view (on a clear day you can see Lake Superior). Not near a large city/town and so most folks plan on staying for a few days in one of the cabin or condo rentals. Whitecap is dated but in a cool old-school way.

Midwest skiing hidden gem. Every bit as technical as anything out west, this little slice of heaven way north in Wisconsin, is only lacking in vertical feet. You want smooth groomers? Check. You want bumped out crud? Check. You want rocks, cliffs, and pulse raising challenge? Check. The saddest part is they only have about 350' of vertical to ski, so you get back to the lift too fast. Facilities are dated, but if you like that "old school", "I'm here to ski/board, not lounge in the room." vibe, Whitecap is the second best in the region. (And if you don't know about Mt. Bohemia, sorry)
