Engelberg has been an off-piste mecca and hidden gem in Switzerland for many years, more recently discovered by the Scandinavians so for fresh tracks it is a good idea to hire a guide. For intermediate skiers there is limited terrain and better to go to other resorts. There are great learning areas for first steps on snow at Brunni and progressing at Gerschnialp. With the glacier the season is long and the slopes are mainly north facing so snow stays although this can get hard packed so make sure you have good edges and know how to handle the sometimes challenging reds and blacks. The resort is easy to access via train directly from Lucerne with the closest airport Zurich, there are frequent bus shuttles to the main lifts from the town. This has good apres ski in town and varied accommodation. Surprisingly this is very popular with visitors from India as a Bollywood movie was filmed here and if you are a lover of Indian food there is a good restaurant in town. For non skiers there is a sledge run, winter hiking and show shoeing and in summer mountain biking, golf course, rope park and hiking. Overall this resort suits best experts on snow and has a charm that will appeal to non skiers looking for a spectacular authentic mountain experience.
